Neil Young is so legendary because he has such a varied career. He’s in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: once for his solo career, and once with a band. That band is the focus of today’s tune. #8: Expecting to Fly Oh, “Expecting to Fly” We would meet on that beautiful shore in the sweet by and by (From “The Sad Cafe” by the Eagles) Yes, Young’s other induction is with Buffalo Springfield, not CSNY. (Oh, don’t worry, they’ll be along soon enough. ) While that band wasn’t around very long, they basically gave birth to the “Southern California mellow rock/country rock/folk rock” sound. From Buffalo Springfield we got Poco (and from them, the Eagles), CSNY, Loggins & Messina, and a whole lot more. As for this song, it’s simply stunning. Young’s voice is an acquired taste (but considering I listen to singers like Randy Newman and John Hiatt, it’s obvious that I’ve (1) acquired the taste and (2) got no room to talk about anyone else’s singing! ), and maybe if there had been a “prettier” voice singing this it would be one of those great classic songs that “everybody” knows. No, it’s fine just the way it is, thank you. Expecting to Fly (With Buffalo Springfield) Written by Neil Young From Buffalo Springfield Again, 1967 Knowing that you’d gone:

It’s an absolutely beautiful song, and I can easily understand why your brother enjoyed it so much.

I agree his voice is an acquired taste. His lyrics however are more poetic than many. Dylan (and John Denver) were the other songwriters in that period that wrote musial poetry as well. this is one of my favorites, I actually own 4 different versions of the song. My favorite is the live album he did in Amsterdam, that includes Expecting to Fly (yes, it is a bootleg album).
