Could this be a scam?

I was scrolling through a poetry group page on FB when I stumbled upon a post. In the post, the person was very excited to report that they were offered a book contract from a UK publisher. That was great news until I read further... As part of that contract they had to fork over £3000. That amount is supposed to cover the costs. What costs exactly I have no idea but if I were that person I’d take that contract and throw it in the trash, no matter how desperate I was to get published. Real (traditional) publishers never ask for money. In fact, they pay the author money (an advance) to publish their book. Anyone asking the author to pay up to publish their book is either a “vanity press” or someone who is offering publishing services. The former to me is a scam. The latter not necessarily. But it’s always up to the author to go through with it or not. A lot of times it is best to stay away, however those desperate to get published will not do that. And the end result may not be a good one.

It is definitely not that easy to get published by a traditional publisher but if you do it yourself it is. It will just be time confusing to figure out all the steps you need to do to get that book published.

@lovebuglena I'm still trying to get my children's book published. A new publisher has had it for about 3 weeks now. I will inquire in another week.

People asking for money so you can make money is most likely a scam especially on the internet and desperate people tend to do stupid things or fall for traps at times and it's not just with books or publishing.

@lovebuglena that is exactly what would happen the moment you hand it over to them.

Some just ask for money and when they get it they disappear.

Thank you for sharing! I didn't need to pay for my book to be published as well. In fact the publisher paid me all the amount even though my book wasn't a best seller. Whatever cost they need to cut, it's on them. I got the amount agreed on the contract.

It could very well be. I hope not, though.
