Irony of ironies, we ordered vegan pizza for Independence Day. It's an American food. Watching Heneral Luna on netflix, it's a movie that depicts the patriotism and heroism of the Filipino. Unfortunately, the movie also shows that ugly characteristic of the Filipino of betraying one's own. Grrrr. We find in Heneral Luna the foresight, courage, and deep resolve of a Filipino to fight for the country even if it means his life. In other words, a hero. Thank you, General Antonio Luna. You still put many Filipinos to shame.

I remember that film way back when cinemas were still open. We watched It on a big screen. It was thought-provoking movie that questions our being nationalistic and at the same time our resolve to achieve it. The ending wasn't really a happy ending since ot exhibits our unpreparedness and disunity in achieving our independence.

@eileenleyva True this is not quite discussed in our history lessons way back then. We only read about them in the books and barely discussed them upon or maybe our appreciation of them isn't emphasized like it was depicted on film. I remember this film was shown before the presidential election but many politicians have taken advantage of it to push everyone down using it to be their agenda in their platforms and look at what happened to us we voted the same old traditional politicians hiding behind their masks as nationalism in disguise.

@rsa101 Come to think of it, I believe I was one who enjoyed turning the pages of Zaide and Agoncillo, and later, an ardent fan of Ambeth Ocampo. Philippine History, with culture and the arts, is so rich. I think I first fell in love with the Aetas in books. They were first to till our soil and made our archipelago alive. But you are correct. The people, particularly the lives of the heroes, must be given in-depth studies. Available courses include only Rizal and Bonifacio. Even the residents of Tandang Sora probably do not know who Melchora Aquino was.

A violent, gruesome end. Did you see the Spolarium? The film ought to be shown every Independence Day. Also ought to be a must-see movie before politicians are sworn to office. The politicians should also be given a comprehensive test first on the life story of Heneral Luna. Which brings me to another point - the traitors must also be lambasted in the teaching of our history.

Watch with the family, so we would know the history of our ancestors. My daughters and I decided to make our own vegan pizza. Just put tomato sauce and cheese, pineapples and bell peppers strips on slices of loaf bread. Toast on pan and wella - vegan pizza.

How different our history could have been if Luna wasn't betrayed.

The Filipino is by nature selfish, opinionated, and power hungry. Here are traitors to Luna and country. Include Aguinaldo.
The Philippines withstood crude and shrewd regimes from the West and one from the East. As we all know, what our nation had gone through wasn’t always triumphal because of some dumb people who are too greedy to realize they were getting played by the conqu

The white one looks pretty good. Weird to eat a pizza on a national day, I understand if southern Italian should do.

The sausage pizza is also vegan. Spicier than the creamy cheese pizza.

@eileenleyva I do not eat meat often, but I am not vegetarian or vegan, I like a very simple pizza with only tomato sauce, garlic and black olives.

Spicy and cheesy. But doesn't taste that good while watching a historical war movie.

Wars mostly take away innocent civilians. The stronger ones have always destroyed the weaker people and that is sad.

It's 11:18PM, but Happy Independence Day Philippines! I've watched Heneral Luna way too many times now. The man was a true leader who unfortunately had to deal with men who did not have his fortitude and whose drive was greed and selfishness. I read somewhere that Heneral Luna was a film that showed how a human being can he a hero, while Goyo was about the deconstruction of the concept of a hero.

In elementary Social Studies, the pupils were simply made to memorize the names of the heroes without really telling their stories, except for Rizal and Bonifacio. As a child, I picked Gregorio del Pilar as my favorite. He was the most youthful looking in the pictures. Even played on an idea that if ever I have a son, I'd name him Greg, from the hero of Tirad Pass. You can imagine my shock learning my hero was actually an anti-hero. Yes, you could render Goyo a deconstruction of a hero. Thus the tragic end. A tragic hero usually has a character flaw. Goyo was young and arrogant. He wallowed in glory being a general at a tender age. Admittedly, neither did I know of why the brothers Juan and Antonio Luna were heroes - a painter and a doctor respectively. They came from a 'de buena familia' and even had the privilege of pursuing their studies in Europa. It took more than a century to finally tell the genius and the passion of the brothers, in a film with Antonio as the protagonist - Heneral Luna. A heart-wrenching tale of the Filipino ever divided, as we are now. The Spolarium scene gave me goosebumps.

@aidels Wow! A criticism par excellence! Thank you for a very accurate analysis of the movies. We need such reviews for our people to understand. Perhaps you can turn the response into a discussion.

@eileenleyva Thank you. Though it's mostly because I've watched both films more times than I care to admit. Maybe I will. If I can find time to tweak it.
