Delta Variant? All of a sudden the pandemia becomes Greek?

I simply woke up one morning and heard the news reporting about the Delta Variant. Whoa! That must be a formidable force - as in the 'Delta Force.' The WHO, I learned, decided to apply the Greek alphabet to the CoViD-19 variants. Alpha Variant - detected in the UK September 2020 Beta Variant - detected in South Africa May 2020 Gamma Variant - detected in Brazil November 2020 Delta Variant - detected in India October 2020 Considering there are 24 letters in the Greek Alphabet, the WHO is probably subliminally telling the world the pandemia will be over after the Omega variant. This must elicit a violent protest from the fraternity of brothers. Or even sisters. There's the rub - Alpha Phi Omega and Beta Epsilon and Sigma Rho and Mu Phi Epsilon, etcetera. You wouldn't want your brotherhood names reduced to virus variants, do you? But then if not the Greek letters, we'd be subjected to memorizing B.1.617.2 and the like. Sorry Chuck Norris and Lee Marvin. It is what it is now.

Well, guess they have to call it something. since Sars cove 3 4 5 etc would be too complicar=ted. Aparently. since Sars cove-2 became COVID19...

There's a word novel in the CoViD-19 corona virus.

@eileenleyva You might've been able to say that two years ago, but if you're using "Novel" now.... you must be living under a rock. I'm sorry, but after more than a year.... "novel" should not be used.

They have to find names as they name hurricanes.

Yup, the meteorological organization could have invented names for the Pacific and Atlantic storms. I don't know why the names are ordinary male and female names. Should have named these typhoons after Roman and Greeks and Norse gods and goddesses. Or perhaps Roman and Chinese emperors.

I think they are simplifying things since we can easily remember them using the Greek alphabet than using the numbers that looked confusing already when having a lot of variation and everything.

@eileenleyva Those are names that didnt have variation but the covid has more variations now that is quite confusing to remember. It could have been easy to remember from which country it came from like the UK variant but of course they do not want their country associated with it.

@rsa101 I would have named the variants: CoVi King U (UK), CoVi So Af (South Africa). CoVi Bra (Brazil), and CoVi In (India).

In time - H1N1 became an ordinary byword. Just like C3PO and R2D2. Same with OB 1 Kenobi. Too many references on Alpha and Delta and Omega.

We all have these variants and yet we still can't call it Wuhan virus of China virus? What gives? WHO is under the thumbs of China and is as much guilty as causing this pandemic because it failed to give ample warning to the rest of the world even though they were made aware of it before hand.

@eileenleyva true. China needs to compensate the world from the damages this pandemic has brought.

@allen0187 Will never happen. Not in China's playbook. China does not admit to any wrongdoing.

Tedros' director-generalship was China's brainchild. He delayed declaring the pandemic and covered-up the outbreak in Wuhan. Somebody needs to hang that creature in the gallows.

For me it's good that it's four, if they had done it with three it would have sounded like radiation. If it's not writing the Greek alphabeth, then Alpha, Beta, Gamma for me is radiation. B.1.617.2 sounds good to me. I like numbers. Could have taken more known numbers. The first one get 3.14, then 2.71, then 6.022.

If I didn't know Hulk, I would know nothing about gamma radiation. Quite poor in numbers, I must confess. I don't even know if you are referring to pi in 3. 14 Could be biblical but even in reading the Bible, I ignore the numbers. I know the numbers has significance but I could understand the verses without the numbers.

@eileenleyva 3.14 is pi, 2.71 is the natural logarithm, 6.022 is the beginning of Avogadros number. 2.71 is my favourite, but pi s also quite cool. It's nice with numbers that just show up everywhere. And knowing about gamma radiation because of the Hulk is actually quite cool :-) One should never underestimate what it's possible to learn while reading/watching something quite different. I just know that 666 is in the Bible. I think? But this virus isn't really bad enough to be called that I suppose.

The Delta variant has reached China. The Chinese has been battling the variant three weeks now, I think. Considering the virus originating in Wuhan, we must brace ourselves for more shocking news.

Greek is a curious language for me. The books of the Bible were in Aramaic, Hebrew and Greek before translation centuries later. But borrowing a line from Shakespeare - Greek still - is Greek to me. The alphabet makes us sound knowledgeable when we mention such words.

It is because WHO thought naming variants after countries was fuelling hate crimes.

That was because WHO suppressed the news. Had the WHO been transparent and did not conspire with China when the disease broke out in Wuhan, the world would not have felt betrayed.
