Climate change

The arguments over climate change have been going on for quite a while now - is it real or just natural variation? Has it been caused by human activity? Have the facts and figures been manipulated to scare us? After all it wasn’t so long ago that we were being told to expect either another ice age or a nuclear winter! But in the end, does it matter whether climate change is human-induced or not? The end result is going to be the same - far more extreme weather - flooding, wildfires, landslides, widespread problems with new crop pests moving to new areas, crops unable to cope with the new conditions, fish stocks lost from the traditional fishing grounds etc. etc. The devastating events we’ve seen so far are only the start. So whether we believe it is caused by human activity or not, it seems that either way, the sensible thing to do would be to do whatever we can to try to maintain a stable climate within a range that supports the life we are adapted to. I think it is natural, as it happened thousands of years ago, I suppose it is cyclical. I fear we have to expect devastating events, I hope not as bad as those that caused the extinction of dinosaurs. They love to scare us, I remember the 70's when they told us to stop using the car because we only had enough fuel for 25 years, no one more... 50 years passed, we still have more than what we need.

@Anqaya In the 70's they predicted that we had no more fuel NOT now... so they were wrong. They want to scare us, no matter what is fake or true, just to make people more responsible. Jakarta is sinking from a lot of time, it is the the world's fastest sinking city in the world and it is in part because of natural causes, but mainly it is because of the excessive extraction of groundwater for drinking and commercial use... so man-made disaster.

@LadyDuck I don't think they want to scare us. But everyone has different opinions. I don't know details about Jakarta sinking. I told what I heard from TV. Btw, I wanted to say that back then vehicles used more fuel. In the coming years, the amount of fuel used lessened. Because in the 70's they predicted keeping in mind the existing vehicle structure, they calculated that it will by 2000. But after that more advanced technology came into common use. And the fuel use got reduced.

I think in the 70's, our vehicles used more fuel than in 2000. So, that's why the fuel is still lasting. But they are surely not scaring us. I saw the other day in TV that Jakarta is sinking.

Bearing in mind the world has been in lock downs galore these natural bizarre climatic events still occur & quite ferociously. Saving that the human race are a disgrace with their careless disposal of their rubbish. Not forgetting to mention the shipping disasters & horrible spills of toxic stuff are ding so much harm.

That's true, but the time-frame of the lockdown is too short to have an impact when we're talking about the climate warming as a result of changes over the past hundred years or so. A couple of months is not enough to make any difference!

So do you think there is any change to the climate or not? (regardless of whether humans might be the causeof any such change).

Human activity is to blame for climate change in a way.But then,we human-being can do nothing about sunspot cycle that causes the climate change.

@Fleura There is no denying the fact that human activity makes weather condition worse, for example, cutting down forest, greenhouse effect caused by the excessive carbon dioxide emissions.

Surely if the sunspot cycle is the cause, that is not connected to human activity?

But do you think we should try to mitigate the change, no matter what caused it?

@Fleura Depends on what you propose to do about it I guess. Of course we should protect our environment in whatever way we can.

Nobody knows about climate change. Probably partly affected by global warming

I think 'climate change' is just the new name for 'global warming' - because global warming was too straightforward to describe all the severe storms etc we are likely to get.

talking about climate change will really involve a never ending discussion. but one thing for sure, the weather is getting crazier everyday. this morning, the weather forecast said it will be 29C with some rains. No rain came and it is night time now but the temperature is 31C

Climate change is a natural process too. But the adverse effects that we are getting these days are definitely due to too many human interferences in Nature. It is high time we own our mistakes and mend our ways.

Regardless of the cause, whether human or natural, do you think we should try to stop it?

@Fleura We have control over Human activities and we should be responsible for that. We have no control over natural one except for the fact that we can indirectly affect it.

Nobody really knows the truth behind climate change , maybe it is just part of our evolution. Perhaps we will have to adjust to the changes in the end.

They do happen, but the question is, should we try to keep the climate as it is if we can?

In my opinion, climate change is caused by humans. But not us...I mean the common people. Instead it is caused by the powerful people who operate above the law. So, in one way, a normal person has to drive a car every day to reach the office. Because that is the only way. But some rich people, who release harmful materials every in the river and air....well, you know the next. And yes, maybe govt, does scare us a little. But overall they have a good reason for that.
