We Can Adapt More Than We Give Ourselves Credit For

I recall years ago when I was looking for an apartment to rent. I told the agent it looked a noisy neighborhood with traffic junction right in front. Her reply looked innocent enough “you will get used to it over time”. At times that reply replays in my mind when I confront a new reality. The past year has proved our ability to adjust, make needed sacrifices, despite some initial resistance. When it comes to sheer survival, we are ready to go the distance, lie low, and swallow some pride even! I have had reverses in my life like most others. And once I found my footing again, I looked back at my response and reaction and patted myself that I was made of sterner stuff. It does take a while for me to accept the new reality but soon I attune myself and accept the changed circumstances. To pick up the pieces is not easy but once I ride over the crisis, I overcome some mental blocks too reassuring me that I need to stay cool and up the ante. How have you faced some tough situations? That is the way. We do what we can, press on, and adjust to the new reality. We are put through the wringer by an unseen enemy still stalking us. I saw a cartoon where monkeys were wondering humans are more like them now with masks etc!

It's fun to reminisce those past days of good and bad experiences. Feeling blessed with all the life experiences and moving on.

Life is after all a mix of all experiences - from the tough times, we learn more. So the earlier we go through them, the better it will be for us than at a later stage when time and strength to recover are at a premium. I think everything has a purpose. Good to feel blessed with whatever comes our way.

I have faced masterly with patience and endurance the tough situations in life. I was able to learn a new language, adapt the cultural and traditions of the the foreign country which is no longer foreign to me after 4 decades of living in Germany.

That gives you confidence and satisfaction. I too lived in three countries, learned the language of one country, and have friends from all the three. So I can look back at life and reminisce.

@thelme55 I was born in India, lived nearly half my years in Singapore, and five years in Indonesia. Some great moments to keep me going and a few that touched my life. We are all the same, similar emotions, feelings, despite a few trying to tell us we are different

@Shiva49 That’s true. Which 3 countries have you lived? I am also looking back and reminisce.

Of course, toughness is a relative term, and to some, just hopping up in the morning, is a big ask. To a depressed person, everything appears tough, and everything is a big ask too. I console myself that even after the toughest day, I can still sleep soundly at night, and wake up to a new day in the morning. The toughness of the previous day does usually not look so tough in the next morning. Mornings refreshen us to life.

@Shiva49 Yes, we are playing musical chairs with the virus here, and the virus appears to be the one playing the tune too. We can be positioned well, then find ourselves out of position again. It reminded me of this Zen koan about position, and positioning. The positionless position exists, but not within the individual, nor within oneness. What is the positionless position? If something is positioned, it is not positionless. And so, the positioned has a part within oneness, but God is not positioned, but exists everywhere as the positionless positioned, within nothing, but everything, combined. God sits outside of oneness, but inside it too. The paradox of God remains a mystery to all except him.

@innertalks Maybe as per my headline here, we should take more credit then for dancing to the tune of this virus.

At times, I do worry something lies low to spring a surprise on me catching me unawares. Now more than 50% of such nasty surprises are behind me after retirement I plan to the extent possible but a knock between the eyes happens at times disorienting me. In a way we are blessed to find refuge in a sound sleep at night to wake up to a fresh morning. Then even in down times, we still are able to dig deeper to marshal our resources. The pièce de résistance is our indomitable will to survive in dire times with undying hope that we shall survive. What prompted me for this post is our fight back against the wall, as long as it takes, approach to fight the menace of this pandemic which pounces on us at will like today headlines show: "Breaking news: Sydney COVID-19 restrictions introduced after surge in cases; WA, SA, Queensland close borders to Sydney, NSW; Victoria restrictions ease"
