Transgender reviews--2 documentaries and 1 'Hollywood' film--Gay Pride Month June 2021

As a gay man I have been puzzled about transgender people because, in spite of what was said about gay men 70+ years ago, I never wanted to be a woman nor have I been exactly PC with drag queens. I did at one time, in the 1950s, have a relationship with Paul who I thought was a crossdresser but now that I think of it he might have been transgender though little was known about it at the time. This was just before Christine Jorgensen, an army veteran, who in 1951-1952 had sex reassignment surgery and made headlines when she came home from Sweden. (As an aside she went to Christopher Columbus High School which I, also, went to 2 years after she graduated but she is never mentioned there.) It wasn't until 22 years later that Renee Richards, a tennis champ, came out as transgender and battled to play in the women's division! Due to "Changing the Game" and "Growing Up Trans" I have become more understanding of transgenders and though we have many things in common regarding being 'different' and 'coming out' they have a much harder time and looked at differently than gay people, even from those of us who should know better. The More I learn about them--and I have a lot more to learn--the more I admire their tenacity, their struggle and their bravery. "Changing the Game" (HULU) follows 3 high school athletes and how they navigate, fight to stand/play where they belong. "Growing Up Trans" (Prime Video) focuses on children and how they are handling their sexuality, mainly before puberty, of who they know they are and how the parents deal with it, in most cases with the father having the hardest time. It also emphasizes how doctors and researchers acknowledge the kids are pioneers. For the record "The results included the following LGBTQ suicide statistics: LGBTQ youth were 3.5 times as likely to attempt suicide as their heterosexual peers Transgender teens were 5.87 times more likely Gay and lesbian youth were 3.71 times more likely Bisexual youth were 3.69 times more likely to attempt suicide than teens who identified as heterosexual." ( PLEASE WATCH "GROWING UP TRANS" AND "CHANGING THE GAME" AS A DOUBLE BILL. "Adam" (HULU) is a 'Hollywood' satirical look, and not too good, at the above problems!
A recent study found a higher risk of suicide among LGBTQ+ youth. Support from parents and peers can counteract these LGBTQ+ suicide statistics.

That is certainly a tragic thing, I have had two friends from long ago one I thought was gay but discovered he was a Transvestite but the sweetest person alive and I learned to love him as a friend and many nights were spend in NYC bars just to help get him back on track when things went off track my other friend turned out to be gay but with a deep wish to turn female, He never did but he was a joy to be around and we sure had some of the wildest shopping trips just like two best girlfriends, I miss them both but I lost track of them ages ago and then I went to Latvia and the rest is history,

In India the things are different . Still one cannot openly say that he is a gay as he fears that his own parents won't accept him and he has to love his life as his parents and ultimately goes through lots o troubles in life. We are still behind the western countries and are like living in the 20th century where being a "gay" is like a curse.

@GreatMartin America is very developed and most of the people there are broad minded unlike here . Many of the people here don't know even what the gays are. It's very hard to make people understand here that it's normal and let them live their lives as they want.

@sjvg1976 No most are not broadminded--we still have a lot of anti-gay discrimination but we have been fighting it for over 60 years so it is better than in a lot of countries!!

There are quite a few "identities" now. I knew a very boyish gal who later became a trans man and is much happier now. But it was a long, hard road to get where he is now . . . lots of bullying growing up, and he did try to take his own life a couple times.

@GreatMartin I know, I know - although I can respect it, that goes in the realm of "too much" for me.

Now Renee Richards should not be playing in the women's league in tennis! He still has bigger bones and body mass. Not fair to the biological women! Can't we have something for women! They even want to be in our pageants! There should be separate categories for trans people!

She hasn't played in tennis professionally for a long time--she is now and has been a doctor!
