As I’ve said, this is a tough countdown! For today’s song with a great saxophone solo I’m turning to an obvious and iconic sax riff. Can you believe it’s this “low” on the countdown? I know. TOUGH countdown!!! #8: Turn the Page - Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band It’s not really a “sax solo” in the sense that other solos are on this countdown. No, it’s just five notes that convey the absolute pain and loneliness Bob Seger pours out in the lyrics to one of his most iconic tunes. Thomas Cartmell was the actual name of the man we all know and love as Alto Reed. He passed away from cancer on December 30, 2020, not too long after Seger called it a career in touring. He could play anything, from the smoking, jumping “Betty Lou’s Gettin’ Out Tonight” to the celebratory work in “Old Time Rock and Roll.” But when you hear those five notes that open “Turn the Page,” you’re transported.
