Big Headache Dealing With Social Security

Well the saga continues. I called yesterday to verify that the form was recieved so I can add the new bank account for her monthly deposits. Yes the form was received. But it is/was the wrong form. I knew the lady that I was talking to was just trying to get out of doing any work and off the phone as soon as possible.
The lady I spoke to on Friday was very helpful. She gave me the numbers of the forms that I need to fill out and have signed. She also told me that I can bring them by the Social Security office without an appointment to just drop off paperwork. The other lady I spoke to told me the form had to be mailed or faxed--no exceptions.
I had a gut feeling and I should have called back again the following day. But the wait on hold is long and almost an hour. Sometimes you get put on hold and hung up on. That happened several times the first time I called. This woman must have been in the office all by herself. I wish I had written down her name and I may have. I need to look on that paperwork.
I'll be going back to Baton Rouge to have my mother sign these papers on Tuesday since the office won't be open until then. Some things are just never smooth and easy.
Have you ever had problems dealing with Social Security before?

I'm so sorry you're going through that nightmare. I hope it's sorted out on Tuesday.
Yes, when I got my Social Security. They told me one thing and did another. I could have had a higher check, but they messed that up and it was too late to do anything about it when I realized what happened.

@kareng The person on the phone told me I could void out my application and apply for widow benefits. Then when I turned 70 my SS would be higher and take him off my benefits and go with my own. When I got to the office, I talked to the woman and told her what I intended. I thought that's what she did until I got my check and then used it to pay my bills. Too late to do anything. She said I would need to pay back what they gave me and then issue another check. It was too late for that.

Somehow, things have always been very smooth for me when dealing with that. I am sorry you have these issues.
I do know however that the wait times on the phone is insidiously evil.

@RebeccasFarm They need a better training for most of the employees there and supervision. They need to be held accountable for their actions.

@kareng They really need to get it together for people as if it is not hard enough. They system is brutal.

I shudder at the thought of having to do anything with the government here. Things just do not move

That all sounds frustrating. This lady should learn some professionalism. Such employees can give so much trouble to others. I hate calls with long wait.
Hope things are resolved soon.

@DocAndersen Good question. Also, why is it so easy for some and not others. Disablitiy awards for instance. I know several people that were really disabled and needed help but yet were denied over and over and then you run across someone like my brother's girlfriend who goes from doctor to doctor to obtain painkillers and has no offiicial diagnosis that gets it on first try.

It does sound like they are being lazy there. There should not be that much trouble changing your bank info.

Not with social security but with other government institutions. It can be so irritating many people just give up. Worse still is when you get through go through all the information then they put you on hold then say its not their department & transfer you to who they think can help to go through the same long winded process only to be told they don't deal with it then put you through to yet another department & so it goes on. I feel your pain!

Too bad you could not talk to the helpful one again and not the 2nd one that did not care. I like to ask people's names and ask how to spell it if not sure. I do not always ask and wish I did after I hung up. I was lucky when I set up to get my Social Security here in Israel I had a nice person to deal with and so it went into my bank account in shekels. I have no idea what happened to her but when I was looking through something I came across her name and now not sure I can find it again. Believe me I have other headaches dealing with places from here that I had to call and sometimes I would get nice and they still did not help me out and other times mean ones. It is not easy dealing with bureaucracy.

No real problems except holding on the phone forever waiting to speak with someone. Have a great 4th.
