All back to Abby….somebody, Abby Normal? today. Thanks again for all your well wishes with the side effects of the second covid shot. The side effects are all gone, now, even the headache. Now to focus on music! Please indulge me. The last two songs in this countdown of songs that have the titles of other songs in the lyrics are hits, but you won’t know this one. #3: Dublin Blues - Guy Clark And, truthfully, it’s a crying shame that you don’t know this one. Or this guy (no pun intended). Okay, NJ Chic may know his name because Jimmy Buffett covered one of his songs (“Cinco de Mayo in Memphis”). But DANG this man was a great songwriter. Otis Gibbs called him “A giant oak tree in a town full of plastic flowers.” When I heard that Doc Watson had passed away the first thing that went through my mind was this song’s line: “And I have heard Doc Watson play ‘Columbus Stockade Blues.’” And, understand, I’ve MET Doc Watson! The referenced song, “Columbus Stockade Blues,” didn’t originate with Doc Watson, but rather the country duo of Darby and Tarlton in 1927. It became a standard in country and bluegrass music. This song, about unrequited love overtaking a man’s thoughts while he’s in Ireland, is one of Clark’s best songs. And that is saying something, considering some of the classics he wrote. I agree. I first heard “Desperados Waiting for a Train” from Jerry Jeff Walker, but after I heard Clark sing it I didn’t want to listen to Jerry Jeff’s version anymore. And, “technically,” Jerry Jeff has a much “prettier” voice. But Guy’s voice was just so honest. Hard to believe they’re both gone now.

Nope. I do like JB's Cinco de Mayo in Memphis. I didn't realize it was a cover.
