A bonus, a volunteer

purslane and citronella

I bought a few plants and herbs this spring. Included in my purchases was a citronella geranium. I noticed a tiny bit of extra foliage when I bought it. Two or maybe three succulent looking leaves. They had broken off another plant. I was surprised when the scented geranium bloomed. I was also surprised when the extra leaves began growing. The extra volunteer has bloomed a few times now. It is a lovely ground cover called purslane. This is a hybridized version of a wild plant. Again, I will tell you it is an edible plant. I do not eat it, I do not have enough. I had rather watch it bloom. I enjoy the volunteers in all parts of my yard. There is some yarrow that sprung up in the middle of my back yard. Again, I have purchased yarrow, both this year and two years ago, but this is the wild, native kind. I will move it somewhere to enjoy again next year, I hope. Yarrow is a valuable medicinal plant and makes a good tea.

I have lots of purslane in my yard and driveway but I've never seen it blossom. Are you sure it's not portulaca? I do occassionally munch on a purslane leaf but mostly just pull the plants out. I saw some yarrow growing in an unkempt grassy verge but the city mowed everything down before I could come by with my trowel...

I am told that the native purslane only has very small yellow flowers. I have never seen the wild type bloom. It is a portulaca type Portulaca oleracea L. The flowering portulaca that we get from the garden center, the Moss Rose, is (Portulaca grandiflora) . I wish I had a big plot of wild purslane, I would likely add it to meals.

How nice that you have an extra little plant. It is always a nice little bonus when you manage to get one.

Yes, it is. I hate to admit that my mom OFTEN broke off parts of plants to try to start them on her own.

Volunteer plants are always nice. I bought a couple of potted plants for the church planters and also have some volunteer's in along with what I bought. Gives the planters an extra pop of color.
