Can you believe, I’m on the road? Just an overnighter. I’m going home before all the crazy holiday weekend traffic gets going. Meanwhile, here’s another song from Neil Sedaka on my list of favorites.
#3: Solitaire
Yeah, this one paid a bill or two.
Covered by the Carpenters, where it was a #1 MOR (now “adult contemporary”) hit and top 20 Billboard single, the song was also covered by people ranging from Andy Williams to Elvis Presley.
You did well here, Neil!
His co-writer, Phil Cody, had just gotten a divorce and was in the habit of playing solitaire (this was before the Windows version, remember) as he dealt with the pain, so I guess the words came naturally.
As you can tell by this marvelous ballad, Cody was obviously in a lot of pain. The cards might have been good therapy, but this turned out to be some of the best therapy imaginable: a memorable song.

Who would command the hand he’s playing:

Epic performance of Solitaire by Neil Sedaka, recorded on 2nd October 1981. I was in the audience for this amazing performance...

Let’s face it, Karen Carpenter could’ve sung the phone book and made it sound good.

Well, that happens when people get divorced. It’s such a common thing in America, almost to the point where McDonald’s should set up a drive-thru divorce lane, but it does affect people. John Prine did one of my favorite albums after his first divorce, and his producer told him the album was so depressing they should pack razor blades in it for people who wanted to slit their wrists after listening!

@FourWalls Oh I see. As much as possible I don`t like divorce but of course people has their own valid reason for doing so.
