I hope people were waiting for this one. To me, you can’t have a Rolling Stones countdown without this one. That’s why it’s on my list!
Here’s the penultimate song on my list of favorite Rolling Stones tunes.
#2: Wild Horses
How about this for a combination: Keith Richards and Gram Parsons?! Huh?! What did Keith and Gram ever have in common?
ANSWER: Heroin.
Well, that’s what people speculate, anyway. At the time, Parsons had just ended the Byrds and moved on to the Flying Burrito Brothers (which included future Eagle Bernie Leadon). And Keef was Keef.
Somehow or the other, they did get together and swapped a lot of things, including music.
There is a longstanding rumor that Parsons co-wrote this song. The fact that the Flying Burrito Brothers’ version was released (on Burrito Deluxe) a year before the Stones’ version lends a lot of credence to that rumor.
Parsons couldn’t handle his drugs, dying at 26 in a hotel room near Joshua Tree National Park. Keith, on the other hand…..

That’s the problem…..you’ll say, “She has great taste in the Stones, except for that one stinking song.”
