In memory of Charlie Watts I’ve been counting down my favorite songs by The Rolling Stones. The countdown ends today with my favorite tune. I warned you about Some Girls being the only Stones album I owned, so….. #1: Before They Make Me Run So you get busted for heroin in Toronto in 1977. You’re facing years in prison. What do you do to show your remorse? You write this! Yeah, that’s our Keith. There’s a quote of his that’s a popular meme on Facebook: “I never had a problem with drugs. I had a problem with the police.” To be fair, this isn’t exactly an in-your-face, screw-you-I’m-a-rich-rocker song. Yesterday I mentioned Richards’ friendship with American country-rock icon Gram Parsons, and the line “It’s another goodbye to another good friend” is widely believed to be about Parson’s 1973 death from “booze and pills and powder.” Later in the song Richards acknowledges the long term side effects: “I did my time in hell. Wasn’t looking too good but I was feeling real well.” Keith doesn’t sing much in the repertoire of the Stones, but when he does it’s memorable. Exhibit A is this marvelous tune. Rest In Peace, Charlie. Thanks for reading. Before They Make Me Run Written by Keith Richards (credited to Jagger/Richards) From Some Girls, 1978 Only a crowd can make you feel so alone:

I can see why you like that one, he has kind of a honky tonk voice. Do people still even say that?. I do. I like when bands let the other people sing. Sounds good.

interesting choice. my stones world was greatly influenced by listening to armed forced radio, so, the only stones songs i knew for the longest time were their most popular songs. I do like this one - as I said it is interesting.
