Clinging to childhood days

I have had a happy childhood even though our parents had little money while bringing us up.
We all now see better days and can afford what we could not while we were kids. I still eat the same food that we ate those days which was simple as we could not afford anything better. I do try out new recipes and also order for food that one might call exotic occasionally
Today it was a sweet dish made from green gram for breakfast. We ate a lot of it as kids.
Do you still eat what you ate as a kid?.

No, I don't... Everything my mother cooked used a half kilogram of animal fat to fry it. That isn't healthy. My parents bought the fattest meats they could afford because that's what tasted best to them. We've known for 30 years that eating that much fat was unhealthy.
I eat more veggies than meats and love all kinds of fruits. We couldn't afford things like that when I was a kid.

I get you. I would do the same but what we ate as kids was healthy - may be my parents could not afford to buy 'fatty' stuff (lol)

@DaddyEvil That justifies you changing your food habits, habits that killed your siblings may be?

We call those small green beans monggo/munggo/mung beans. A lot of people cook them on Fridays, but we cook them any day. We eat them with rice for lunch or dinner. It goes well with fried fish.

@allknowing We still eat the same dishes, then once in a while my sister will recreate dishes from other countries that she likes.
I do remember some dishes from their hometown, but back then, we had relatives traveling to and fro with the produce/ingredients and/or living here and helping to cook them because they were tedious to do.

@merrybelle2021 We do that too. There are several dishes that we never ate while we were kids but those simple dishes that my mother made are eaten often.

All of us have a fair share of our childhood memories. Life back then for us was so simple, or we could even say we do not really gave time to problem about life back then. All that matters to me back then was to be able to play and have my snacks and money when going to school, to came home early to be able to play with my friends in the neighborhood. I don't really care for material things back then, but as i child i also envy those who could afford to buy an apple or oranges and chocolates and ice cream. But were living in a province so we have so plenty of fruit bearing trees. Yes, i still eat those fruits i used to eat when i was still a child.

Felt nice reading your post.
When one is financially well of and most become so compared to their parents life does change for the better in terms of material possessions I must admit I have a prettier house, a prettier garden, I wear clothes that cost more .............but when it comes to food I still cling on to what I ate as a kid. No doubt I try out new recipes but what I ate when I was a kid stands out.

@angelitovillegas It is the parents who had a hard life and we kids had a great life as we never felt we had little compared to many around.

Same here Judy. Mother was a great cook. She cooked nice dishes from ingredients that did not cost much. I too try out new recipes but eat a lot of what I ate when I was a kid. I have all the recipes of what mother cooked.

I eat some the same but not all. We did have a lot of the fast easy foods to fix more often than what I buy them.

Some of it... but when I was growing up we didn't have 'foreign foods' such as pasta. Rice was mainly for rice pudding. My parents had never heard of pizza. We had good food which I enjoyed but now my children would refuse to eat some of those things - for example we used to eat mushrooms (which we gathered from the fields in season - never bought) but now I am the only member of my family to like mushrooms. We also often ate cheap dishes such as liver or cauliflower cheese but my children would refuse liver and don't like cooked cheese either! We ate a lot of stewed fruit or fruit pies with custard but again they won't eat those, I have no idea why!

Great memories through food Fleur. I remember my mother ever so often. None of those 'foreign foods' were there when we were kids.
