While peeking at the headlines on the Associated Press app today I came across a couple of headlines side by side. The first said that millions of unemployed are facing difficulties as unemployment benefits expire. They have “few options.” The second one talked about the long road to recovery from Hurricane Ida…. Due to lack of workers. Facepalm. Gee, do ya think some of those people losing unemployment benefits might go to one of these endless businesses with HELP WANTED signs and replace their unemployment with employment benefits??? And on Labor Day, no less!

Nope. They aren't that smart. Govornment says 'stay home' and is paying them to do it. And, rather than put in the effort to get a job, those same people would rather live off of unemployment for the rest of their lives.

That’s what they have been doing, but the honeymoon is over.

I would like to see you live on $600 a week--that's below poverty level--most people have to work 2 jobs to just survive!!

@GreatMartin USD 600/week is a lot. There are many people live less rhan USD 100/month for family of 4-5

@TheSojourner Is that any different than the right to NOT wear a mask or NOT have a vaccine??

@TheSojourner — how long did it take us to realize that smokers were putting others at risk before we banned indoor smoking. Smokers still have the right to smoke, though, just in a way that doesn’t jeopardize everyone else.

@TheSojourner And yet we live in a world where someone who has an abortion gets a worse sentence than a person who rapes her--what is right and wrong in today's world. I would never associate with the woman you talked about but I wouldn't interfere with what she wants to do or someone taking a hit of coke or a scotch on the rocks. By the way I got my flu shot yesterday--had my 2 Pfizer shoots PLUS a booster and I still wear a mask and try to keep a distance.

During the golf finals every McDonald’s I passed had $14/hr adult, $10/hr student starting salary help wanted signs. That’s a lot of money to say “you want fries with that?”

well there is the small issue of geography in this equation. unemployed people are all over the US, the cost of transportation to NO, would be significant.... we would need to re introduce FDR's CCC!

The greater point is that New Orleans isn’t the only place with severe labor shortages. I was in Richmond, Kentucky last week. College town, lots of part time job opportunities. The restaurant I ate in was only open 10:30 - 3:00 because of staff shortage. “Few options”? There are help wanted signs everywhere, many with “starting salary $14 an hour” for burger flipping.

Depends on qualifications... friend of mine has taught a course for ten years at a community college and was just recently told he couldn't be a teacher there anymore because he didn't have an MA... he couldn't even give a one-day workshop because of no MA. (And he's very successful in his field.)

Nope no one is that smart to do something like that but you do have the right idea now if only someone would pick up in that and also steer themselves in the right direction,
