I have been watching this story on Netflix. A young man back in the late 70s is accused of several rapes, kidnapping, assault, robbery, etc. is taken into custody. His behavior is terribly off and the lawyers assigned to his case have him evaluated by a psychiatrist. It is found, through much time spent interviewing and evaluating him by several psychologists, to have multiple personality disorder. The doctors delved into his childhood and found that he was horribly mistreated as a small child on his stepfather's farm. He was constantly beaten and sodomized, among other torture, by his stepfather. Multiple personality disorder or, what it is called today, Dissociative Identity Disorder(DID) is a rare syndrome that occurs in only about 200,000 patients a year in the US. This disorder begins in very young children(can begin as early as three or four) who are extremely traumatized during the stages of their young lives when they are forming their personalities. It is a safety measure for them and different fragments of their personalities become these different parts of the whole person who is fragmented due to the trauma. This age group is when a young child is beginning to experience the outside world, developing relationships, and establishing their place in the scheme of things. Billy, Ragen, Danny, Allen, Arthur, and five other personalities, including a lesbian female, were initially found. Other personalities, 14 more, were called "the undesirables". Some of these were the ones that seem to have actually done the crimes he had been accused of.
