It finally happened

After living next door for at least four years (maybe more) our next door neighbor got evicted from the house. For the past two at least, he'd been squatting in the home. The house was sold in July, and the new owners had been trying to be nice ever since. But, he refused to listen. He is no longer allowed on the property

The squatter wasn't really that bad of a person, well okay he was a bit. But, we saw this coming as soon as we learned he didn't own the house. I just hope he doesn't come back and cause trouble now that he's got a warrent against him. Wonder if he'll get in trouble for not paying property taxes on the home for the past two years or if that'll fall on the previous owner's family.

@CarolDM Taxes are owed, but I'm not sure who's responsible. The family of the decessed privious owner, or the squater.

@kaylachan I would think he will still owe the taxes.

I am afraid my niceness would not have existed if I had purchased a house with someone in it.

If it was my husband, I still think he'd try to help. He's just that kind of person. Me, though. Oh hell no.

It is very dangerous to buy a house with someone in it in my country. I would never do it even if they are less expensive.

How could any one buy a house that is occupied is not quite clear.

@kaylachan How could he have been allowed to stay there in the first place is confusing.

@allknowing I don't know how much of this is true, but an elederly man owned the house and was apparently friends with our next door neighbor-turned-squatter. He'd been allowing this guy to live in the house rent-free, while he lived out-of-state. About two years ago, the man passed away and the house became the responsibility of the next-of-kin, which happened to be three brothers (who also lived out of state) Estate sales can be a complicated mess and there was some back-and-forth between the previous owner's family and our former neighbor. In July, the house was sold to a pair of cousins... and that's when the sugar honey ice tea hit the fan so-to-speak. Finally coming to a head, yesterday.

Our neighbor next door had been squatting. Basically means he was living in the house for free, with no record of him living there. renting or otherwise. When the house was bought (a lot of people buy them site unseen) that's when they found out about the squatting situation.

So he lived there for free all that time? I hope he found someplace else to live without squatting.

@DianneN He has three kids on the autisim spectrum. When I asked him simple questions, his answer was 'my wife is trying to get them on SSI'.

I knew somebody who had a huge house that got foreclosed on. His wife left, and he lost his job not sure in what order. He continued to live in it for several months after the fact, but eventually moved in with some friends. Not sure what he did after that...maybe eventually he was able to get his own place, not sure.

@toniganzon We're not sure if the new owners plan to rent it out or if one (or both) plan to live in it. Right now it's unlivable.

Sounded like good news at least for the owner. In the subdivision I am currently at, there are rumors that people claiming other's property as if it's their own house.

No this idiot just claimed the family of the previous owner (who passed away two years ago) would let him buy the house or something like that.

@jobelbojel Nope. But county records are public, so the new owners were able to find out if the taxes had been paid. And, they hadn't. For the past two years. Which was when the previous owner passed away.

So are we. But, when you have owners who live out-of-state, then that's what you wind up with. Found out the new owners plan to flip the house. George and I are hoping it's not another out-of-state hands-off owner who rents to crazies.

It was way pass the time that they should have got out. I hope the house was in good condition when the new owners moved in.

It's unlivable. One of the first things they did, after evicting our squatter, was to order one of those long, deep, dumpsters. They spent the majority of the day yesterday clearing the house out, including getting rid of the stove and fridge. Exterminators will need to come and clear out the bugs, and the inside (and most of the back) need remodeled.

He had a wife and three kids. Neither parent, worked. So, basically. yeah. I think he didn't want to become homeless so stayed on until yesterday.
