FINALLY, one that Great Martin knows!
He’s a youngster, you know, only having had 21 birthdays. (He was born on Leap Day.
) For everyone’s pleasure here’s the next song on my list of favorites with “bridge” in the title, in honor of my new dental bridge.
#8: Chelsea Bridge - Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington
Okay, so you’re like me. You don’t know diddly poo about the jazz masters. But you still know Duke Ellington’s name. Heck, Stevie Wonder named a song after him!!!
And Ella. OOOOOH Ella. “Is it live or is it Memorex,” the commercial in the 80s asked. It doesn’t matter, because that was a voice.
This song is basically an instrumental, with Ella just singing “oooh ooh” to the melody.
Stand back. You are going to be transported.
Chelsea Bridge
Written by Billy Strayhorn
Recorded by Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington
From Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Songbook, 1957

A really beautiful song, melody and lyrics. Strayhorn and Ellington were masters and then Ella singing it tops it off.
One you might like to hear too by Ella is a song called "Invitation," recorded by many others too. I came back to add that even Boz Scaggs, in his crooner guise, did a great version of "Invitation."
