General purpose in life

October 4, 2021 10:55pm CST
Actually, our general purpose in living in this world is to understand ourselves and develop for the better, in the sense of developing our strengths and covering up our weaknesses little by little.

We are born with lot of purposes in life which I believe is decided by God. Many a times we end up doing something we never wanted to do. I wanted to become a doctor but ended up being a teacher. Playing different roles in life makes us understand ourselves better.

Our purpose of life changes with age and situation. As long as I am able to perform my personal and professional duties well and contribute something to the society, I feel that I am living a purposeful life.

That's right, aren't those who are successful simply because they develop their abilities? Doesn't God oblige us to worship because with that we can pray and understand ourselves?

@Synvan You are right. Not all can be renowned successful but we all can work to our potential and live a purposeful life.

The material world we live in doesn't exist independent of us. It's here because we are here, and we cause all the creation and destruction of it.

I think it is a good reminder esp when we don't really know what or we do not have the time to think what must really be the purpose of living.

That's a very nice summary of the general purpose of life. We learn from experiences and become better the next time.

Where does that purpose come from though, from ourselves, or from something else again, like our creator? Does everything have such a purpose, animals, trees, rocks even too? Or, is there no given purpose for anything, and the thing itself finds its own purpose in pursuing that which seems to give it a purpose, through interest, necessity, or from interaction with others, and sometimes by following a common purpose of others, ourselves too? If God exists, would he also have a purpose, for all that he does? I would say that God would work from a purposeful fashioned goal of creating things with purposes inbuilt in them too. All things created must extricate their own purpose from within themselves, which God placed within them, and then they need to learn to live from it fully, and this is the real goal of any life. "The supreme purpose and goal for human life…is to cultivate love." That's a quote from the spiritual guru, Ramakrishna. Now, as God is love, and love is God, we are meant to build and cultivate a relationship of love with God too. “I believe that the very purpose of life is to be happy. From the very core of our being, we desire contentment. In my own limited experience I have found that the more we care for the happiness of others, the greater is our own sense of well-being. Cultivating a close, warmhearted feeling for others automatically puts the mind at ease. It helps remove whatever fears or insecurities we may have and gives us the strength to cope with any obstacles we encounter. It is the principal source of success in life. Since we are not solely material creatures, it is a mistake to place all our hopes for happiness on external development alone. The key is to develop inner peace.” A quote from the Dalai Lama “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honourable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” A quote from the Philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson Why would these two spiritual giants say the opposite to each other about the purpose of life? I might say myself that they are both wrong, as the sole purpose of life is to love God, with your whole person, and then, and only then, will you live from his truth in you then too, as loving God creates love in you, and opens you to seeing, and receiving, and being, this truth then too.
