I wouldn't have a book on Creationism in my classroom

I wrote a little while ago about a Texas school administrator saying that teachers need to have books representing both sides of issues like racism and the Holocaust. I got to thinking and realized that I would never have a book on creationism (the idea that God created everything in 6 days) in a classroom library. I wouldn't have a Bible or a book by Ken Ham in my classroom. Why? Because I am a science teacher. I teach scientific facts. Religion isn't part of my curriculum. If students want to talk about creationism or religion they can go to their church, mosque, synagogue, etc. I don't believe in it and that is not my area of expertise. I provide the science info. That is it. I'm very glad that I don't teach in Texas.

@NJChicaa I heard about creationism the first time in my life when my husband and I visited the USA and two young men accosted us in the street with the question, "Do you believe in fossils?" I had to laugh and told them that there is nothing to 'believe' and that we lived in a part of Germany where you only have to dig a hole in your garden and will find some fossils because once there was an enormous ocean in our area. There is a museum near our town which is full of fossils. One man looked at me as if he had encountered the devil's grandmother, thrust a leaflet into my hands and ran away with his partner. I read the leaflet from beginning to end and couldn't believe it! To be honest, I'm grateful for this encounter because without it I'd know nothing about creationism. I've never heard about it in Germany. There may be some misguided souls but they make no noise and have no influence whatsoever. I'm sure that if a teacher told their pupils such nonsense in a public school, they'd be fired.

How can there be two sides to any of those? I can't see how there can be another side to racism, Holocaust or evolution. So I'm also very glad I don't teach in Texas.

@NJChicaa That man was either very ignorant or very stupid. Either way, he should not have that job.

You are supposed to present opposing views on some topics. A Texas administrator said last week that if teachers had a book about the Holocaust then they should also have one presenting "the other side". As if there is "another side" on the Holocaust.

I don't blame you there. I agree. Keep religion out of schools.
