Things That Make Me Go Hmmm (Part 42,607)

One of the things that I absolutely LOVE to use for nocturnal relaxation is white noise. There’s soothing joy in things like recordings of wind or rainfall. There’s scientific evidence that it’s not just me, too: there’s an entire color spectrum of noise, and a number of these colors have been found to help a number of things, including relaxation and improving hearing.
This has brought about a number of things in the world, including machines that generate various white noise recordings depending on a person’s personal taste, radio stations online, and a bunch of videos.
That’s usually where I go when it’s time to turn out the lights: You Tube.
And that’s where I encounter something that made me go “Hmmm.”
There are lots of videos on You Tube that have anything you’d want to fall asleep listening to: a fireplace, a thunderstorm, waterfalls, the ocean, or even a fan. Most of them have video accompaniment, although some of them tout themselves as “blank screen” or “audio only” videos.
So here’s my “hmmm” moment: a number of these videos are tagged “fall asleep in two minutes” or “you’ll be asleep in no time.”
And these “fall asleep in two minutes” videos are ELEVEN HOURS LONG!!!!
Listen, I might have insomnia on occasion, but I promise you, I will have given up trying to get back to sleep long before eleven hours passes!!
Truth in advertising? If you’re going to fall asleep in minutes, shouldn’t these videos be no more than 30 minutes long?
ELEVEN HOURS????
What, are you going to time yourself instead of falling asleep??
Oh, well.
Sleep tight tonight….and if you have trouble falling asleep, listen to eleven hours of “fall asleep in minutes” white noise!
See what I mean? (Just for informational purposes, I don’t expect you to watch the entire thing!)
Fall into depp sleep in 2 minutes with heavy rainstorm & terrible thunder sounds in foggy forest at night. rain sounds for sleeping, relaxing, studying, inso...

I rarely do. Maybe when I’m sick I’ll sleep that long, but usually even then I get up a time or two…go to the bathroom, get a drink, take some medicine, then go back to bed.

I guess that's so you can go back to sleep should something wake you.

Truthfully, those videos are also for people who want to study, meditate, or just relax. The sleep is a byproduct.

You’re not strange. Or, at least, you’re never at the meetings.
Seriously, the VA gave a tinnitus coping skills class for people who’ve been diagnosed with it, and part of what they gave us was sleeping earbuds so we could listen to white noise at night.
Part of me wondered what our grandparents did at night before all these things were invented, then I remembered: they slept with the windows open and listened to the crickets chirping!

They've made it long enough to help you stay asleep. Hubby and I both have a white noise machine; but I can never sleep; so I don't use mine anymore; and hubs has taken to leaving the TV on 24 hours a day. :-(

I’ve read that noise helps improve hearing in older people (I can say that, I’m less than six months from social security). It has to be the “right” kinds of noise, though.
And truthfully, those aren’t just for sleep. They’re also for studying, meditation, or just relaxation.

@FourWalls Since you travel so much, I thought you were already retired. Have a great day.

Waterfalls do have a soothing sound. And as a backup I always have a fan
