Can you believe I’m halfway through monkeying around with songs that have “monkey” in the title? Kudos to @DocAndersen who suggested this. Here’s another song to make you go ape! #6: Don’t Monkey ‘Round My Widder - Homer & Jethro Homer & Jethro could do so many things on so many levels. This isn’t a song that you’d normally associate with them (they were famous for parodies; or as I usually describe them for the kids, Weird Al before Weird Al was born), but it’s still funny. This plays on the “stereotypical male” facets of thinking a cold is fatal (“my fever’s way high and I’m sufferin’ with a cold, I’ll soon be walking on those streets of gold”) and jealousy that will reach beyond death (“my big black ghost will come sneaking back, I’m gonna haint [a southern pronunciation of haunt] you boy”). This was written by Karl Davis, of Karl & Harty fame (and you all are going “fame???? Where DO you get these people from??????” ). I can’t believe the guy who wrote the beautiful ballad “Kentucky” also did this. But he did, and Homer & Jethro made it their own with some tasty jazz electric mandolin playing from Jethro and smooth singing from Homer (Homer really had a good singing voice). This is a fine example of their many sides. Don’t Monkey ‘Round My Widder Written by Karl Davis Recorded by Homer & Jethro From Life Can Be Miserable, 1959 Boo!
Homer & Jethro - Life Can Be Miserable RCA Victor LSP - 1880. Album released in 1959

That’s correct, it’s a “southern” pronunciation for “widow.” Much like a “winder” would be “window” in anyone else’s world.

See, that’s why I put down the songwriter and the album AND link the song. It’s not a figment of my imagination!
