One of my all-time favorite rock and rollers has a birthday today. Jimi Hendrix would be 79 today. He died in 1970 of complications due to the side effects of prescription barbiturates. He is one of the greatest influencers in electric guitar. His distortion and wah-wah techniques changed rock and roll forever. His rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" is legendary. Mimicking screams, bombs, and planes(in reference to the Vietnam War) and other distorted regressions this performance was voted 52 on a list of 100 greatest guitar solos by readers of Guitar World Magazine. I do remember the late Jimi Hendrix version of the Star Spangled Banner from the Woodstock record player I used to own. I did not know that the sound effects of the song were related to the Vietnam War since I was a child when Woodstock played.

A lot of music of that era was about the war.
