Eating

I remember my mother telling me about when she used to go to her sister's house that her brother-in-law made the kids eat in the kitchen and that they were not allowed to have second helpings not because they were overweight but because it was a waste! But the adults were allowed to have seconds! My mother said, "Fine if they have to eat in there and not have seconds then me too!" And she took her plate in the kitchen! We always ate together as a family. Now if we had company and need more places we would add folding tables, our child's table, whatever that made enough eating spaces. I did the same for my kids and do for my grandkids. And we/they always get seconds, thirds even. I have never ever denied a person, adult or child food!

The biggest issue for us was many adults believed all children should only drink milk. I can't drink milk. So, whenever we went to a friend's or relative's, my mother, grandparents, and aunts had to keep an eagle eye on the host to stop them from pouring milk into my glass. All knew about my milk sensitivity (between lactose intolerance and complete allergy), but some were so steadfast in their belief that all children need milk that it was a constant fight. And, the other issue for them was, if they gave me something other than milk, then the other children would want something other than milk as well, and they were not willing to budge when it came to their children. My mother, grandparents, and aunts were like, "so, explain Michelle's condition to your children, and quit trying to make my child sick."

Oh my! They didn't seem to care about your allergy! That's sad.

@Chellezhere Yeah, I know how that goes. You were very lucky to have a friend there. About 10 or 15 years ago, something like that, the schools here started giving choices, there were always two different meals to choose from and a salad also. They now have the parents fill out a form that is given to the teachers, cafeteria and clinic of any allergies. This is for all grade levels.

@dfollin No, they didn't. Lunch ladies at school were the same way. But high school was easier because our next-door neighbor was one of the lunch ladies. So she always came to my rescue when her coworkers insisted I take some milk.

You sound like us. Common sense. Meals are a family time. We had to eat in the kitchen at a huge table. We were not excused until everyone had finished. Refusing to eat what was served was not an option. As for seconds, I would get if I wanted and I loved all the food cooked.

Eat what you are given doesn't make much sense either. If it makes you sick, then what was the point? I am sorry you had to go thru that.My mom is a very picky eater , so we never had to eat what we didn't like or want at the moment.

@dfollin I'm not.sorry I'm glad And well.cooked food from as soon as I could eat solid foods never made.me.sick. Infact I brought my kids up just the.same.as.I was and they were all good eaters too Kids should be doing as they are told. And if they do that from the get go they will have a good routine and not be picky eaters

@dfollin Good for her for taking a stand and eating with the kids in the kitchen. Every family has its way of doing things.

He's a jerk. Kids need more food than adults, those restrictions should be for adults.

Not giving seconds when you have it to spare is wrong to me. If people are still hungry, feed them. Even ones overweight.
