Strangers are sometimes kinder

January 11, 2022 7:54am CST
Took my 26 month old youngest boy home from the hospital today. He survived gastroenteritis and dehydration. My wife, my mother and I took pains to go around social services, politicians, and charity institutions to help pay for the bills. My mother-in-law, a recent ex-overseas-worker and currently a small businesswoman, who already seemed to have very little concern for my kids, only gave the peso equivalent of 5.86 USD 3 days prior, and that was even after being asked. During the discussions about the hospital bills, her presence amounted to nothing, not even a verbal contribution. Riding home in a public transportation, a woman who most probably saw that we were picked up from the hospital gates, gave my son a bottle of juice and the peso equivalent of 1.95 USD on our way down. She didn't even know who we were. Have strangers been sometimes kinder to you than family?

I hope your son recovers quickly. That lady stranger was very kind. I have had strangers who were kind to me. I also in some occasions have shown kindness to strangers too.

Strangers have helped me and I have helped strangers. Haven't you got insurance which covers hospital bills?

We have PhilHealth, a government issued insurance plan, but it provides very little.

I'm happy when strangers nod hello or let me merge into traffic.

Yes, I like that too, and I wave in return.

I'm sorry for your situation. I hope your little boy is OK now. One time my brother refused to take me somewhere and a penpal had to take me instead.

In 90% of the cases, encountered by me, in various situations , the foreigners were more hospitable and always tried to help me! Here I am referring to friends and more distant family !

I wonder why that is in your country. A friend went to northern Europe once but some of the native strangers are a bit hostile to asians.

most certainly. I have met people online that gave me a lot of money and clothing and bought things I needed badly without my even asking. when my aunt and 2 of my grown kids were living luxuriously and offered nothing. My aunt even said she could send me nothing because she was paying for her new home and her granddaughters college fund ! She couldn't even send a few dollars for me food. and she is supposed to be a christian. these strangers I feel are angels on earth.

My family has always been my back up and leaning wall whenever I needed assistance. So, I can truly count on them during my dire financial situations. But yes, there are times that not too familiar persons helped me out. There was one time I was riding a jeepney and my loose change available was not enough to pay my fare. I had bigger bills but the jeepney driver said he couldn't change my money to smaller bills, so a young man, a stranger, offered to pay the rest for me. From then on, I paid it forward by offering help when I noticed someone in the same predicament.

Thank you. This stranger even waited until we were about to disembark from the transportation as if she wanted to remain that way: a stranger.

I pray your son gets well soon. That the stranger woman was kind to your baby was God send. We have a saying in India " One who is helpless in the World, God is with him.

The phrase one can depend on the kindness of strangers is so true at times. Some people can be very empathetic to others in need. Many of us have this attribute in us and will offer help without expecting anything in return. It's a great quality we humans have. I could always rely on my parents to help me without question. So, in my case family was always there for me...

Yeah I've been there before. I stopped expecting stuff from people a long ago. And somehow, help comes from other ways. It just does.

So sorry to hear that sad news of yours. Hoping that your son is on the mend already and will get back on his feet soon. I am just surprised why your mother-in-law would not help you with the expenses. She is their grandmother and she should be concerned about their welfare at least.
