New Diagnosis?

I saw my regular doctor today...was supposed to ASAP after getting out of the hospital. Notes from visit: - he thinks the Farxiga med is what led..or at least was part of my DKA. - he also thinks I should be on insulin. He's referring me to an endocrinologist and mentioned I may be on an insulin pump. Yikes... He did give me 2 pens of a long acting insulin to start using. Now for the title? He thinks I now may be Type 1.5 diabetic. My pancreas hasn't totally failed but it doesn't make much insulin at all. I've been doing low carb and my sugars are still 200+

Oh dear. Not good. But at least you know now. Can your pancreas get better at making insulin

Yes, not good for sure. I think once the pancreas fails I don't think it will get better at making insulin. You'd need a pancreas transplant, if that were a thing

I should have known I'd get to the point some day. Was hoping to get off all meds but it didn't work out that way

@tammys85 Well maybe I can at least keep the insulin dose low. Thank you.

I was afraid that was going to happen. Make sure you use the insulin like you are supposed to

That I would need insulin? Well I will be going to an endocrinologist and they'll help out with that.

@wolfgirl569 well it was only a day really that I had done it before getting sick. With a little insulin yesterday i woke up under 200. But a low carb meal raised it over 200 again

A 1.5 diabetic needs to take insulin each day, I've been taught. The nice part about it, your fasting sugar readings will go back down to a normal level.

Right, they start to react like a type 1 which need insulin to live. I still want to enjoy some of the foods I like though, right now I am doing low carb mostly because I am not that hungry

I'd say it's time to move on the doctors advice. Blood sugar highs and lows put stress on your organs and can wreak havoc on your overall health. It's time. I've had blood sugar issues for decades but can control it with diet alone. You can't. Diabetes has been responsible for many deaths in my extended family. It may be upsetting but you will be better off over time. I have two friends and a sister that use an insulin pump. Blood sugar valleys and spikes are no longer an issue and they claim to feel normal again. I hope that you'll move ahead and address this soon Sorry if I sounded like a Dad lol.

I had got it under control with diet at one point, got my A1c down to the 5% range. However, struggled the past year and a half. I know that is a big part of it, but also angry I was put on the one med that messed up my system. If an insulin pump helps, and I can allow foods I like once in a while...then I'll be glad. Although needing one makes me feel like a failure for not being able to do it on my own. But I'll update about it all once I see the endocrinologist.
