I wanted to write a little bit about some of the cool things I saw in the Savannah-Shellman Bluff-Tybee Island area. If you have some time in the area, I would definitely suggest checking some of these out, especially if you are more into the nature walks/hiking. *Harris Neck Wildlife Refuge, about 45 mins or so south of Savannah, has some hiking trails and a wildlife drive. While I was there - I saw TWO large alligators sun bathing AND an armadillo. It did not disappoint! It's also free to get in. *Skidaway Island State Park, I believe it cost $7 for entry and had some wonderful trails - about 6-7 miles of it at least with beautiful terrain! I did about 4 miles through swampy, covered and uncovered, dirt trails. An awesome way to see nature and my FAVORITE walking spot. It has a nice overlook that views out on swamp *Wormsloe Historic Site, costs $10 for entry, has a museum and various events, and basically you can drive down this beautiful road past ruins, visit gravesites, a nature trail (apparently 7 miles, I definitely did not walk that far) *Bonaventure Cemetary. This is one of the most beautiful cemetaries in the world - so says their website and I can attest for that. Boneaventure Cemetary was featured in the book "Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil" (which apparently is popular - I've never heard of it, but I did buy it while on this trip and will read it and report back!) Has some beautiful statues, and all surrounded by these beautiful hanging spanish moss trees. It's free to get in, but you can pay for a tour with some historical background if you choose. *Fort McCallister State Park - an old fort from the civil war, has a self-guided tour for $10, which is really really interesting! *Tybee Island. This is on the coast just east of Savannah. It was off-season, so I didn't get to see it in all it's glory, but I was able to stop at a few shops and check out the ocean. We originally planned a boat tour but it got cancelled due to high winds. We did got to the Tybee Rescue Maritime Museum, $10, which was nice. And walked along the beach for a little bit. Very beautiful and has some fun shops and restaurants in the area. *Hofwyl-Broadfield was a slave plantation, located south of Savannah, and they do frequent tours. Admission is $10, and they give you a tour of the old house and some of the grounds. Originally, it produced rice and had 357 slaves to do their labor....After the civil war ended and slaves were emancipated, it turned into a dairy farm and eventually because a historic location. I visited a few other places but these were my favorite and top sights. I am VERY glad I didn't spend all of my time in historic Savannah alone but got to see some of the beautiful nature and history outside of the city!
