An interesting find

My mother died over ten years ago but I’m still using up her stock of soap! I started off with all the ordinary modern bars and now I am down to the more special, vintage ones. One bar of Yardley lavender soap was evidently the last of what was originally a set of three in this box. There are two coats of arms on the box. One is the familiar arms of our current queen and beneath it says ‘By Appointment to HM Queen Elizabeth II purveyor of soap’ but the other is less familiar and below that it says ‘By Appointment perfumers to The Late Queen Mary’. Queen Elizabeth II succeeded to the throne in 1952. Queen Mary died in 1953. A Royal Warrant can continue to be used for up to two years after the death of the holder, so in this case Yardley could not have used the ‘By Appointment to The Late Queen Mary’ after 1955. So this soap must be between 66 and 68 years old. It still looks like a normal bar of soap and still smells strongly of lavender. I guess that’s a good recommendation for Yardley (or at least for Yardley soap as produced over 60 years ago!) Shall I use it up or sell it as an antique? I never seen and knew that Yardley manufacture soap too ? I have used Yardley Talc Powder and Yardley fragrance It's a Soap ? Don't you think Soap also comes with Expiry date ? I would say - You should sell it as an antique

A few people have mentioned that soap can go 'off' but I've used a few old soap bars by now and they seem fine.

I think she was given nice things as gifts and decided they were too nice to use for 'everyday'!

I think I would use it, so old it must be dry and last for a very long time. I used what I found in my mom's apartment. I thought to pass to my niece, but I am pretty sure she would throw.

@Fleura My husband loved to buy soap bars and I have a box full of them. Most are surely more than 10 years older, I think it's the right time to use them.

I think you are right, another old bar of lavender soap that we are using is lasting a very long time. Maybe we should all store our soap for a decade or two before using to make it last longer

Wow. It looks vintage. Interesting story. It's upto you, to use it or sell it. As per my opinion you should use it as it was your mom's belonging. Take care

Doesn't soap go off if left for too long? I'd sell it as an antique.

It doesn't seem to be any different. At least I haven't noticed anything unpleasant about the other bars I've used.

That's true, but I do have a lot of things from my mother and only so much I need to keep really. She kept things from her mother and that's why I have so much stuff now!

You might as well keep the lavender soap as mementos,or maybe they will appreciate in value.

Actually they probably would say to keep it if I asked them! But then in later years they might wonder why we have all this stuff...

I would keep it. Seems a pity to use something that has got value and is historic
