Zen koan: The cloud of entrapment, is not necessarily a cloud of entanglement, unless we enter it ourselves

The Zen master stroked his chin pensively, as he continued to be rained upon.

The great Zen master, Falal Zalalen, was looking up pensively at the clouds, floating by overhead. He said to his student, standing next to him: "Clouds cannot entrap, but they can entangle." "We are Human beings, but we are not just Human beings, unless we become entrapped in the vehicle." "No two clouds are the same, and neither are two human beings ever the same either." "Our cloud is our spirit." "We should let it freshen our thoughts, with its cooling shadow, which stops us from overheating within ourselves." Just then, it started to rain, and the master, and his student, run for cover quickly, towards being back into the confines of the Zen Temple. Neither of them made it, though. The student, running faster than his master, tripped on a rock, protruding out from the ground, and then the Zen master, tripped on his student. The master was cushioned in his fall by his student, and sitting up, still atop of his student, he winced and smiled, at the same time, and commented wittily too: "The Zen master sits atop his student, but the student has tripped him up." "The student then is the master of the Zen master, and the Zen master the master of only himself, when not himself." "Here I was myself, my old Human self, and so I fell over you, trying to escape the rain, but a true Zen master never tries to escape any part of life, but always endeavours to embrace it all with himself." "I have learned a valuable lesson here too, my lad," he said, and then he helped his student back up, and they both retreated into the Monastery to escape the now heavier rain. Often life can get very complicated and confusing, This made me think of the song Both Sides Now where the lyrics are I've looked at clouds from both sides now and I don't know clouds at all as well as life and so on,

Yes, I know that song too. It has a catchy tune to it. Yes, the complications can so confuse us that we trip over our own problems, magnifying them even more.

Thanks. Yes, I like to look for unusual photographs like that. That photo is of a man that is actually a street tramp, who I think often carry the look of a Zen master in their eyes too. We can see right through to the heart of life through such eyes, either pained, or loving, (eyes) it seems to open the same window to us to seeing truth through.

I had shared an apartment during my bachelor days with one who was a nature lover. He just loved to sleep under the stars. One day, it started raining heavily at night, and then I remembered him sleeping outside. Inadvertently I had locked the door and he had got drenched. Was worth a good laugh! Even the Zen master could not completely ignore the reality of this physical world when the push came to the shove!

@innertalks The apartment was on the second floor and he used to sleep on the open terrace. Not rainy season but caught us by surprise! He was a nature lover. Lost touch over forty years ago after I left the company.

@Shiva49 I hope that he was not such a nature lover, that he slept outside, in his birthday suit too. The mosquitoes would have had a great feast, indeed!

@innertalks Good to meet people who are just different - they make us think of the possibilities to enrich our lives. He used to tell we make life complicated.
