My little town does not have a grocery store. It is hard for some people to drive to another town to do their grocery shopping. So many are forced to do what they can at the Dollar General and the local gas stations. So to help with this my husband and I decided to start a Farmer's Market/ Flea Market. We plan to start a garden so we will be able to provide some fresh vegetables. Have you started one before? Do you have any tips and experiences?

1. Location. You need to arrange a high traffic area to set up. 2. Permits, license and insurance. These are a must. 3. Vendors. You need to have several lined up that will sell produce or products. 4. Determine a schedule that is viable. Open only when a variety of products are available. 5. Select someone to oversee the operation. 6. If you charge for booth rentals you'll need to report the income. You need to be registered as a business or legal entity or list it as personal income for tax liabilities. 7. Be willing to do all the legwork necessary to make it happen. It might not be as easy as you think. It will take an initial investment of a substantial amount to even get off the ground. I don't mean to pee in your Wheaties but there is quite a bit involved to open a farmers market. I hope you can make it happen.

We bought a building for another business that we are putting a pause to. It has lots of land for a Farmer's Market and will help bring traffic to our other business once we can get it up and going. Thank you for the insight! Definitely a lot to look into.

That is great you are doing that. I remember living in a place with no grocery store and the Dollar Tree was it and like you said the little convenience stores. No tips as I have never started one. Good luck with it though! I am sure people will appreciate it.

@Meggan This will be great if you could. I would like to see all and know how you are doing. Maybe you could do videos and have a YouTube channel too if you like. You could put the link in your profile here.

Dollar store carries limited selection of meat. I don't know how they manage it, I would go crazy.

That is a good idea. I love shopping at the farmer's market. The produce is fresh and reasonably priced.

I pray I can find produce vendors, the last person who tried one went and bought store produce and people were not happy!

No, but that sounds like an amazing idea. I thought you were going to say you started a business going grocery shopping for other people.
