"I Started a Joke" was written by Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb and features Robin on vocals.
Released in 1968 "I Started a Joke" is another "downer" like "New York Mining Disaster 1941". Robin said that the melancholic melody of the song was inspired by the sounds on board an airplane. Apparently, to him, the droning after a while took the form of a tune.
The song hit #1 in Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Brazil and Denmark. It was #5 on the US Record World chart and #6 on the US Cash Box and US Billboard Hot 100.
