It is very odd for a herring gull to get stuck on a church roof with one of its wings impaled on a lightning rod. Thanks to a concerned person who works near the St. Joesph Catholic Church in Medway Massachusetts saw a herring gull who could not move due to one of its wings impaled on the lightning rod, the person contacted 911 to ask for help from both the Medway and Millis Fire Department to rescue the herring gull from a tragic ending on March 1. The firefighters from the Millis Fire Department used a ladder truck where a firefighter climbed to the roof where the herring was located and carefully was able to free the bird from the lightning rod. The herring was then handed over to Medway/Millis Animal Control officer Erin Mallette who took the herring gull to the Tufts Wildlife Clinic in Grafton where the veterinarians will heal up the herring gull letting the animal fly away to its home as soon as he or she is healed from the injury to one of its wings. As far I know, I do not know of any herring gulls that get trapped in building roofs on lightning rods.

How in the world did that happen? I'm glad the gull was rescued.

That is a good question since it is not clear how the herring gull got one of his or her wings caught in the lightning rod in the top of a church building.

That does sound a once in a lifetime accident. It's good they were able to free the bird.
