Are you sure?

Normally I don't answer the phone from strangers, but the darned thing had been ringing all day and I answered it with a "WHAT!" This guy sounded subdued but asked to speak to me. Okay, I think, maybe it is something I need to know - happens sometimes. "Are you diabetic?" he asked. "No." "Are you sure?" "Yeah... don't cha think I'd know if I were diabetic?" "Are you sure?" "Yes I'm sure." "Well, do you have arthritis in your knees or back?" At this point I'm just wondering what the heck I've gotten into. "Look, you don't get to my age without some arthritis in your knees or back," I told him. "Do you need a brace?" he asked. "Look," I said. "If I needed a brace, don't you think my doctor would've given me one? Take me off your list!" Good grief! Why on earth would he think I wouldn't know if I were diabetic? I've lived with a fair share of them. And I look like a textbook example of a 60+ year old who should be, but I'm weirdly not. Go figure. Have you ever gotten a call as weird as that? I mean, I've had some weird ones, but not in a long time...

@ElicBxn I agree that those calls can be amusing for a while, but when they insist it becomes annoying.

That sounds like temarketer or a spammy researcher. If they say hi, just hang up next time.. if you are not interested.

Oh, I'm sure he was, the advice of someone who used to work in one of those places was to tell them to take your number off their list. You hang up, they call back.

@ElicBxn Hmmm, then auto blocking has to work extra hard then.

@ihasaquestion this was a landline, not a cell, cell phones are easier to do these things on.

@BarBaraPrz I look like a text book case for Type 2 diabetes, older, morbidly obese, don't exercise...

@ElicBxn My friend Juanita often says "I can't believe you're not diabetic with all the sweets you eat."

@ElicBxn I know. Like he would know better than you if you have diabetes or whatever.

I used to get calls like that all the time. They are trying to sign you up for a study or something. It's a pain in the butt, and they wind up on my block list. A lot of them don't even know who they're talking to. So, they ask some basic questions to see if they can bait you.

I signed up for a study years ago and they sometimes contact me, but always by email. The latest one was for COVID shots, or flu or whatever, but I'm all up to date so... oh, and I'm right at 4 months so I've contacted the doctor's for the 2nd booster. At 68 and rather immune compromised.... I think I need it. We had been so careful when Viv was alive, they wanted to do an early study, but I had to turn it down because of Viv.

@kaylachan I'm sure it was, but since I didn't give them anything... I just had a hard time believing they didn't believe I wasn't diabetic!

@ElicBxn Scammers will do everything and anything. Including calls like that. So, it was likely one of those.

I mostly ignore them, but I can't silence the landline, that's why I answered it.

I got a call from an old woman who called twice asking for Walmart. After she called the second time, I blocked her.

Back in the old days, way before cell phones, I had a phone number that was one number off a bank... We finally got the number changed. Then, a few years later a gal was giving out our phone number because, apparently, she was working in a bar and drunks were asking for her number, she changed one number and told them that. We finally got the right phone number for her. My then roommate called, got her boyfriend/husband and asked him to tell her to stop giving out our phone number to her boy friends... it stopped.

Yes, unfortunately I often get calls like this. Sometimes I just say straight away I’m not interested but if I’m in a playful mood I play them at their own game if they don’t take no for an answer.

Yeah, that's how I felt about that call, well, until the end when I needed to do something else. I may not be too busy, but I do have things to do...
