Surprises At the VA Hospital

Yesterday I had to go to the VA hospital to turn in some paperwork for reimbursement for a bill I paid that was the VA’s responsibility. I got two pretty big surprises while I was there.
The first one was the empty entrances. No COVID guards. No nurses asking the questions. There was even a sign proclaiming that masks are optional. (No thanks, I’ll wear mine still around all those sick people. One of the best things, in my opinion, to come from the last two years is mask wearing in medical settings, where you’re 100 times more likely to run into someone sick.)
Wow. The big government building isn’t enforcing covid rules anymore?
The other big surprise came when I was at the travel office window. I heard a voice behind me tell the clerk, “Don’t believe a word she says.”
I didn’t have to turn around. I knew who it was. I pointed in his direction and said, “Don’t believe a word he says!”
Small Navy, isn’t it? My brother was there, too!
He was having his annual eye examination. He went to get a “tell the director” form so he could pay high compliments to the optometry department (and, I’ll tell you, they are very good there, so much better than the “civilian” doctors they’ve been sending us to). After that we chatted for a few minutes while we walked to his car.
He complimented me on my weight loss. When I got home I sent him a text that I was done and said that I’d seen someone who looked a little like him up at the VA.
He replied, “I saw someone who looked like you, but she was way too thin.”
Will the VA pay me back? Who knows. The reason I paid the bill instead of turning it in to them to pay is I know how quickly they pay (sarcasm there). If they don’t pay a bill that’s in my name for six months, that’s going on MY FICO score, not the VA’s.
Next time — assuming there is one (I hope I’m getting over these panic attacks that are so severe they send me to the ER) — I’ll know and list the VA as my primary insurance.
That was my happy day at the VA.

I agree wearing a mask in a medical setting isnt a bad idea. Glad you had a good trip there.

I saw people wearing masks today at local liquor store and go cannot blame them. I do not get what people's beef with that is, let them if it makes them feel safer.

@crossbones27 I feel the same. I see some people still wearing them here. It is their choice.

@FourWalls I agree. The last time I checked is we do not have any cases recorded in my city lately.

I think maybe officials are starting to let people police themselves. The sign at the entrance said the positivity rate is low enough to do away with the mandatory things….for now.

The anxiety over the VA not paying would have given me a few more panic attacks.
Thanks, have a great weekend, too!

You are right to keep wearing a mask, especially in a hospital, How great that you got to see your brother,

We chat every day, but yeah, that was a special treat. He doesn’t live that far away from me, but there’s major construction on the road between us so a 15-minute trip has turned into an hour and 15 minutes.

Yesterday was my uncle’s birthday. My aunt posted pictures of his party, and I would not have known him if I had seen him, either.

@FourWalls Sometimes it's the fact that you don't expect to turn up wherever it is that you are.

Thanks for the update. It was nice that you ran into your brother. A mask in medical settings is still a must for me.

My civilian doctor was providing masks for sick people before the pandemic. (And, sadly, people were coughing and not bothering to utilize them.
) I’m not a mask-o-phobe so I’ll keep wearing one in close quarters. And DEFINITELY in medical circles.

I was not even sure how VA worked when I went there. I was like what I have to pay medications. like 35 bucks or something for antibiotics but remember went and asked for a pee test and they said just be easier if we take your blood.
I go cool do it and see how people look at me.
I got pulled over and they swore I was on speed. I go my heart is racing because I seen what you cops do. I also said you can search my car. I also said fine arrest me will go to VA to tomorrow. They said they very honest people. We will see and no charge. Court literally said both can go they do not even have to show up. This coming from rich city of Redlands.. My boss was even like look at all those zero's. They both go damn you are smarter than you look.
Anyway, I was like healthcare should be like that everywhere. So silly how we do it as a nation.

People who don’t have a service-connected disability pay for their meds. People with under 30% disability pay for anything not related to the disability.
You got pulled over for playing Rancid too loudly!
