Old-fashioned jewellery

I inherited a lot of things from my mother when she died 11 years ago (incidentally, today was her birthday) and since she kept everything, there were also things from her mother and from her aunt (who had no children) as well.
One of those things was this brooch. I’m not sure whose it was originally, but I think it was most probably from my great-aunt because she liked purple and because it was just in a plain plastic box whereas my mother always kept everything carefully wrapped in tissue paper.
Anyway after I rediscovered it last year it was just knocking about on the table for ages because I didn’t really know what to do with it. I didn’t think I could wear it because I thought it was rather dated and ‘old-ladyish’. But I didn’t want to just give it to a charity shop.
In the end I got tired of just moving it about, and decided I may as well stick it on something. So I pinned it on this cardigan which I have been wearing a lot in the winter.
Rather to my surprise I have received a lot of compliments from all sorts of people!
Have you ever been surprised to find that something was more appreciated than you expected?

It's lovely, and if it's 50 or more years old, that's probably a real amethyst and not colored glass.

I have the jewelry box from my mother, I was given it before she passed.
I have a couple of her mother's rings.
My mother had so many rings, many of which I had only seen a time or two before inheriting them.
I sold many of the rings, as they held no sentimental value to me.
I cannot bring myself to wear her many chains, necklaces, bracelets or earrings, nor any of her rings.

As you say, things only have sentimental value if you have memories of them or know stories about them. Some things I will keep, such as a silver bracelet my father made. Others are obviously from foreign places and I'm sure my grandfather (who was a ship's engineer) brought them back from his travels.

@oahuwriter Thanks. Yes I have a few nice pieces including my mother's engagement ring, and my grandmother's, but I never wear those. I expect I will pass them on to my girls!

No, looks very nice to be me. All jewelry landed with you, how lucky you are! Even if retro, jewelry never goes out of style.
