The flowers are all planted! Roses will be coming up soon, after we discuss my age.
As for now, here’s the song with “flower” in the title that is the sweetest bouquet to me.
#1: Smell the Flowers - Jerry Reed
The first thing you’re probably going to think is, “Huh? THAT’S Jerry Reed? Where’s the “son!” and the silly voice?” Ha, bet you didn’t know he actually could sing, did you?!??
Yeah, he really could. And, as you can tell by the philosophical lyrics to this tune, he could actually write things other than when you’re hot you’re eastbound and down!
Apparently this wasn’t what people wanted out of Mr. Hubbard. While this song did make the top 30 on the country charts, it was nowhere near the success of things like “Ko-Ko Joe,” “She Got the Goldmine (I Got the Shaft),” and “When You’re Hot, You’re Hot.”
It must be me. Another favorite song of his is “A Thing Called Love,” where he again eschewed the silly voice and comedy situations. While his version didn’t do well, the Johnny Cash cover was a big hit.
In this song Reed gave us words we can all live by:
You won’t have this day again
’Cause every road has got to end
So don’t forget my friends to smell the flowers
What a talent.
Thanks for reading.

I’ve heard from my friends. Their worst issue from last night is no electricity, so it’s a great day!

@FourWalls That's great to hear. Hopefully the storms are done for a while.

He didn’t use his “singing voice” very much. Another song that he actually sang well on was “Georgia Sunshine.” But that didn’t make him the money.

@FourWalls Oh wow, I don't remember this one. Now that is country. He was such a funny guy.

It didn’t pay the bills, so he didn’t do it a lot. It’s like Roger Miller: some of his heartbreak songs are extraordinary, but people wanted “Chug-a-Lug” and “Dang Me.”
