Several years ago hubby's sister made a family cookbook. She included "Grandma's recipe for baked beans. Since she was originally from Boston, I guess they are Boston Baked Beans. I am more of an Oklahoma Pinto beans and cornbread person. This deserves some Boston Brown Bread, but I do not have the ingredients or time. I know beans are an economical food cooked in lots of forms around the world. What is your bean preference. I count meals like dal as beans and I am not sure what is in them. We can have a truly delicious day.

I like dried beans such as navy beans, baby lima beans, and pinto beans. I make them then use them in all kindes of dishes.

What a brilliant idea. The recipes can be passed down through the generations.

Yes, I am sure they can. This is from one sister and I am not sure who she made the cookbooks for other than her other sisters and my hubby. She probably included cousins as she has recipes from cousins.

We use all kinds of beans here . . . but honestly I've never made baked beans (except out of a can ). What is Oklahoma pinto beans like?

Start with the pintos, of course and just boil the life out of them, with usually ham bone or ham hock for seasoning. Leave it fairly soupy and serve with cornbread.

@GardenGerty Wow, no sweetner (I often think that baked beans have brown sugar or honey or bbq sauce)? I'd rather it be on the savory side - sounds good!

For several years I would make "16 bean soup" but actually one bean was barley and one was brown rice. I forget what the rest of the recipe involved, but by the time you had all those beans bought up you had 16 pounds of soup beans to put in jars and give to friends.

Field peas is a new one on me? Is that the same as black eyed peas?

@GardenGerty I don't use any particular seasoning. My mother just fried it using oil. Then we eat it as a snack while chatting in the afternoon, or while watching TV with the family.

Oh I love beans. My husband and kiddo won’t touch them. I love baked beans, bean soup, chili with beans, and add chick peas to a salad.

We eat a large variety of beans. I use pintos in my chili, usually because I have some cooked up, but the red ones are better.

I love the idea of a family cookbook. My cousin made a small booklet of his mother's recipes that I cherish. I love most beans, especially dried beans like pintos, black eyed peas, great Northerns, and Navy beans. I make baked beans with a can of pork and beans and add some Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce, microwave them, so technically they're not baked, lol.

Mine were in a crockpot, so also not baked. But good. Made with Great Northerns because I had them on hand. The recipe actually calls for Navy beans, which are smaller.

I used to eat baked beans but since going on the macrobiotic diet I'm trying not to eat stuff out of tins and cook from scratch. I used to eat some beans that at the moment the name escapes me but I couldn't find them in the shops and had to get them from Amazon. I'm going to have to look up some recipes with beans and see what I can do.

These were from scratch, starting with the dried beans. I buy a commercial brand called Bushs Baked Beans.
