NaPoWriMo

Do we have any poets among us here? Do any of you participate in NaPoWriMo? NaPoWriMo stands for National Poetry Writing Movement. You write and post 30 poems in 30 days during the month of April. I have a group I do this with every year. The poems and not for the general public so we can still send them out for publication as "not previously published" after the month is over. Last year I had 3 of those published later. I am hoping to get a couple that I can end out for publication again this year. I just posted #25--and am working on my draft for Days 28-30--the remainder are done and lined up for posting. By about now, you start to run out of things to write about and it is an exercise in word salad, but I find it comforting to know that I can make poetry out of just about anything-- If you are a poet, raise your hand so that I can follow you--and if you write in another genre, please let me know so that I can follow you as well

@RebeccasFarm We'll see if they get accepted and if I send them out for publication--I haven't ever tooted my horn here when a piece gets published, but I could I think--

I've never heard of this before. I've done some poetry, mostly limericks though. I've not written any in a very long time.

There is also a NaNoWriMo--the National Novel Writing Movement--it takes place in November each year--50,000 words of a draft novel in one month--I think that is more of a slog really --

I actually HAVE published a few poems, but I could never be that prolific, unless it was Haiku. I write (usually on napkins and such like) when the moment strikes.

I think there is a rhythm to the NaPo thing. I have gained some confidence in my ability to churn out good drafts. So that is what I do during NaPo--For the most part, they are just drafts, although this year I think I managed to get 2 really good ones that will need very little work when I go back and edit--

I can imagine it might get pretty hard by the end of the month. Good for you for sticking with it.

It does become all word salad at some point. I have all the remaining ones in draft form at this point. For NaPo, I draft and do one quick edit--then I work on them after NaPo--and workshop them with a group of poets I belong to.

I do write poetry. Sometimes poems come pouring out of me one after the other, but lately, I have only been able to write prose. Below is a poem that began as a "song" I told my mother I "wrote" when I was two. The song was, "Oh, the hippopotamus is in the tree." And one day, when I mentioned it to a coworker, she encouraged me to expand upon it. Here was the outcome. The Lonely Hippopotamus There sits upon a big oak tree a lonely hippopotamus. Why won't somebody play with me? My friendship is autonomous. I'll be the best friend I can be - no need to stay anonymous. We can frolic through the park at three and even ride an omnibus. "Oh! Where on earth can my friend be," asks the lonely hippopotamus. Just then, a ladybug flew up and landed on her nose. She said, "Hello, and how are you? By the way, my name is Rose." © Copyright 2006 Michelle My dad, a Vietnam War correspondent, was a newspaper journalist, editor, and photographer. I heard him use the word "wrote" and understood it to mean "came up with."

I have written some poetry, but never participated in NaPoWriMo. I have a friend in London who is taking part this year. She's been having a great time of it.
