Lace is an open fabric usually made from silk or cotton and produced either by a bobbin or needle. It is made by looping, knitting, and twisting in certain patterns. Evidence of lace can be dated back to ancient Egypt and China. In the 15th century, Italy Genoa, and Venice became lace capitols.
Lace of finest linen was made in Belgium, Holland, and France and in 1589 by William Lee in England. Many modifications to a lace-making machine came in the 1800s.
The most expensive lace in the world is Leavers Lace which was first created in 1831 by Englishman John Levers in Nottingham, England. (The name was changed later to Leavers to make it more pleasing to the ear.) There are only a few manufacturers of this type of lace left. They can be found in France and the machinery used has changed very little since it was first created.

I love lace. Who doesn't. Grandma had it on all her tables. Forgot what that's called.

when I was in Bruges a few years ago, I watched bobbin lace being made in a class--it was fascinating!

My mom would crochet a lacy edge on things like tablecloths or handkerchiefs (remember handkerchiefs?)

My mom taught me that and I wish she had taught me how to tat. She made some lovely things.
