Reverend Thomas Matheson, was a different sort of a preacher. He preached love first, before all else.
Here is his last Sunday sermon on love, belief, trust, reason, and faith.
"I will start with this quote:"
'"You cannot believe in God until you believe in yourself."'
"Now, Swami Vivekananda, (1863 to 1902) a well-known, Indian, spiritual mystic, said this."
"And yet, to my mind, it is just not true."
"We should neither believe in our self, nor believe in God."
"Belief is a form of weakness, that takes us away from the truth."
'"Belief in a cruel God makes a cruel man."'
"Thomas Paine, (1737 to 1809), an English philosopher, said this."
"We can infer from this that any held belief is bad for us."
"Belief creates a subconscious mind program within us, that tunnels us away from seeing the real truths then."
"Belief undermines and detracts from love, because the belief is placed above the free-standing operating of that love."
"Drop all beliefs, and just blindly follow love, as when you trust love in this way, it will give sight to what was previously blind."
"Love is the light that shines its truth onto all things, so stay with love, and forget about belief, trust, faith, and reason, being put first, and so above that love."
"All of these must come second, if they need to exist at all, as they are mere attributes of one loving, that trust, belief, faith, develop in the mind, and heart, too, when one loves fully so."
"Ok, that is my talk for today."
And he went and sat down, on his chair, for a few minutes of silence.

The good Reverend had piercing eyes, but were they loving eyes too, or just eyes that wanted to eye people's reactions to his often controversially spoken words?

Well God is love, so that's OK.

Yes, God is love, and so we should put both God, and his love, above all else in our lives, above our own thinking, beliefs, reasoning, feelings. Love tops everything.

@innertalks Except if you don't "believe" in God how do you know that he is love?

@sharonelton Belief has nothing to do with God.
Drop your beliefs, feel the love, and know the God, who exists beyond all beliefs.
God is not known through belief, but by feeling his love.
Our heart knows God; our minds can only just try to believe in him, but can never know him.

I've never heard about this concept before. But come to think of it, it makes some sense. If we put love above all else, then knowing the truth eventually won't daunt us. Because true love is understanding, selfless, etc, etc.
Thank you Rev, for opening my eyes, and thank you Mr. Marshall for this information.

The greatest commandment of Jesus Christ was to love God, with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength.
And so, this commandment does imply that if we do that, all else will be right in our lives then too.

Belief and faith should not lead humanity to see each other in a different light with many Gods competing for our attention and even subservience. That could then make us take up imaginary cudgels and excuses to tear each other apart.
Love is all-encompassing when we are led by it. Then oneness reigns and all created differences dissipate automatically. Many rivers flow into the ocean and there is then only oneness that characterizes love in action.
We are love and no need to contrive it forcefully

Well said, siva.
Yes, we need to put God, and love first, as when we stick doggedly/fixedly to our beliefs, and faith, which even then push God, and his love aside, that's when wars start, fighting begins, and differences are seen from ego, mind, greed, and wants, rather than us still seeing all from love still too.
When we live from love, we stay within oneness. When we leave love, we cause divisions/differences to arise then, and it is these that cause all of our troubles.

@Shiva49 Yes, only love can heal and reconnect the current state of brokenness.

@innertalks Thanks Steve, humanity, and humanness above those that divide us is the panacea for our present-day ills. Now we are not only into not living by our ideals but also hitting others below their belts with an air of superiority.
An approach to repair the damage needs love to power and goad us in all our thoughts and actions. United we stand, divided we fall, is an age-old maxim that is given lip service.
