"Rocket Man" was written by the iconic duo of John and Taupin and was released in 1972. It was certified triple Platinum in the US and scored #6 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and double Platinum in the UK with a ranking of #2 on the UK Singles Chart.
The song was based on the short story "The Rocket Man" in "The Illustrated Man" by Ray Bradbury. The premise of the song is that there is an astronaut bound for Mars and has conflicting feelings about leaving home to do his job. The song relates the notion that astronauts are no longer heroes but are doing an "everyday occupation":
"And all this science, I don't understand
It's just my job five days a week..."

Great song! Definitely one of his best tunes
And Rocket Man was a terrific nickname for Elton. One of many and one John embraced.

This is a great song but I like his more mellower numbers better.

I wanted to go so bad == he's coming to Cleveland in June; but I have trouble walking; and it's just too much for my husband to push a wheelchair that far. Wheelchair seating is very limited too.
