Coming Up Roses Top Ten: A Good Year for the Roses (#6)

Halfway through this countdown of songs about roses as we’re less than a week from the Run for the Roses, I’ll mention my favorite Kentucky Derby Festival event: the Run for the Rosé. Seriously. This is a genius play on the Derby: wait staff from various restaurants run an obstacle course with trays of glasses filled with wine in their hands. Whoever spills the least wins. While you ponder that, listen to the next “rose” song. #6: A Good Year for the Roses - George Jones Everything you love or loathe about country music in one convenient span of three minutes. The heartbreak, woman leaves man, he’s crying about it in his beer, and it’s George Jones. The pain of a breakup with the man so dumbfounded that all he can do is stare out the window (“the lawn could stand another mowing, funny I don’t even care”) is poured out beautifully from the master of heartbreak. How classic is this song? When Elvis Costello decided he wanted to do a “country” album (Almost Blue), this is one of the songs he covered. A Good Year for the Roses Written by Jerry Chesnut Recorded by George Jones From George Jones With Love, 1970 At least you thought you wanted it:

George Jones has long been a favorite of mine. I'm enjoying this countdown. I have an idea of what my pick for number one would be, with an eye toward the derby coming up.

George was great. George will always be great. No Fogelberg, if that’s what you’re thinking. I’m in the tiny minority of people who do not particularly care for that song.

Not much to say about this song; so I'll ask you how you are doing? I will be starting my next group of 10 songs soon. Hope you have a wonderful week.

I’m assuming your next ten songs won’t be your favorite George Jones tunes. I actually got up early this morning and went to the VA to make a prosthetics appointment and pick up my medications (I had the doctor put them at the window so I didn’t have to worry about the post office delivering them while I was gone….or even delivering them ).

@FourWalls No, no George Jones on my list. How far is the VA for you? Ours is in Cleveland -- 40 miles or so away.
