I started almost 2 years ago doing Diamond Art Painting. And on most of the pictures there is a key telling number of this particular color on the picture then the next one is the symbol code for places on the picture.
The last number in the key is the DMC number that is the color code that is supposed to be with "all" Diamond Art pictures. That way if you have extra drills you can save them in a number labeled storage container and if you wind up short in another picture later you will have them.
However I have got a few pictures that doesn't have the DMC numbers on them!

I have not tried that one but I love Paint by numbers where you have a paintbrush and paints with numbers which you will use to paint in a real canvas. So far, I have finished 3 already and I love the end results of it. It is like it was painted by a professional painter if you looked from afar although there is still a difference compared to the original one. I have seen this Diamond Arts being sold online too but it looks a bit complicated to me that is why I haven't tried one yet.

That would be irritating. Yah, freestyle is a good idea.

Sorry for my delayed response. I had a quick research about diamond art painting from YouTube. This form of art caught my attention-- very interesting.
I hope you find the specific dmc number and color for the sections you need to embellish your masterpiece. Have you tried an ebay store that might be selling what you are looking for?
Good luck.

But the drills (diamonds) can be moved or adjusted.
