The weather is here, I wish you were beautiful, as Jimmy Buffett once sang.
Because of the threat of severe weather all over the places that I would probably go to get away from Derby insanity, I decided to stay home. Now, if I’m going to be home I’ll be home because the traffic will basically be an insane asylum for the next three days (“Thurby,” the newer day for the locals at the track; Kentucky Oaks day, which used to be the day for the locals at the track; and Kentucky Derby day).
So I decided to treat myself to a new television. The old one was so old that it had RCA cables (those red, white, and yellow cable connectors where you could hook a DVD player up). New TVs don’t have that. I still have a DVD player (more on that in a moment), so I got an adapter that plugs and converts the DVD hookups to HDMI. Problem solved!
As for my old DVD player, it’s what is known as a “region-free” DVD player. This is an evil plot that you may not know about: DVDs, although they all look alike, have a “region code” built in the information. Ostensibly, this is to keep people in Mongolia from seeing the latest Marvel Comics franchise movie on DVD months before it makes it to the movie house/cinema in the country. Not only does this make the moguls more money, it drives people who like TV shows or movies from other countries crazy.
All is not lost, though, because for every nasty block there’s an answer. (Don’t know if you know this, but there are usually “jailbreaks” available for new iPhones almost as soon as the iPhone hits the street!
) DVD players can be programmed to play the region in the nation it’s sold in (North America is region 1, the UK and EU is region 2, Australia is region 4, etc.)….or some smart computer geek can get in there to program it for NO region.
That means that it’ll play a region 2 DVD (like one of my favorite TV shows from the ITC world in England, The Champions) and a region 4 DVD (like the U.S. TV series The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, which was issued on DVD in Australia but has never been released in America!!
) just as easily as it’ll play my DVD of Animal House.
I know, that’s a lot more information than you ever wanted to know about DVDs, DVD players, and region coding. Sorry.
Anyway, I got a new microwave today as well. The old one didn’t seem to be working as well as it had been, so I thought I’d replace it while (a) it was a mild issue and not a dire emergency, and (b) able to get 12 months same as cash at Best Buy.
So I’ll pull out the region 2 DVD of Christy Moore (Irish folk singer) and watch it this weekend while I’m here at home…and get some microwave popcorn to enjoy with it!
The photo is my new TV, showing the tornado coverage from KTUL in Tulsa, Oklahoma. On the shelf below (this is an old computer desk) you can seem my DVD player.

You are very clever, had no clue about all machinations of modern DVD's. First time I ever heard of this.

No, I am taking about all the coding for different regions. I have a smart TV I know they don't have hook ups. Not sure if DVD players have always had that, but perhaps they have.

@snowy22315 — according to what I read, it started in 1997 when Hollywood realized they were losing movie ticket money to DVD sales overseas. What’s the problem, they’re still getting money!

Given that most TVs today don’t have DVD players or hookups (computers don’t have them, either), I’d hardly call DVD “modern.”

@FourWalls I don't understand twelve months same as cash... is that some sort of payment deferral system?

Five little words: twelve months same as cash.
(Hope you don’t think the words were “gimme all of your money.”

@BarBaraPrz — not payment deferral but interest deferral. If you pay it off in the allotted time you pay just the purchase price and don’t get slapped with 27% interest or whatever it is.

@FourWalls in my previous company, Kentucky Derby is a big event.
We do mock betting on which horses will place.

It’s a madhouse around here, that’s for certain. Much like Indianapolis at the end of the month with the Indianapolis 500 car race.

I don’t know if it’ll get bad here; however, every place I would have gone or thought of going is or will be under at least a 20% risk of severe weather (some as high as 60%). I know where my safe place is here, and I don’t have to worry about CD-sized hail banging my car when I have a garage to keep it in. It’s for the best.

You learn things because you want something (in my case, the original [i]Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) series on DVD) and have to learn to circumvent stupid rules to get it. You can blame 14 years of government employment for that.

It’s a bunch of computer geek gobbledygook. Frankly, I don’t understand much of it, either.

Thank you. I’m watching a live whale cam from Maui right now. Sure, I could watch it on the phone but it’s so much prettier BIG!

That stinking TV is almost smarter than I am!
It automatically connected to my Apple TV, set the Apple TV box so it (and the remote) controls my TV, etc. Pretty stinking cool!

I already knew all that about regions and jailbreaks for electronics but you probably just blew some peoples' minds.
Shame on you!

@FourWalls Well, yeah... if you're going to get in trouble for using them, you might as well see who else is "dishonest", too.

I still watch most things on my iPad, but there’s something about a big screen sunset that’s special.
I need to get a toaster oven someday.

My old one was 27”, and this one is 43”, so it’s a big jump for me. That’s as big as I can go, though, without having to buy a new TV stand. You can see how close the legs are to the edge, and nothing bigger will fit on that.

@FourWalls. Mine is a 32inch and the legs barely fit on the table it is on.
