I was late on paying the rent

I got back here this afternoon to a letter on the door notifying me that I was delinquent in paying the rent and that they would start the eviction process if I didn't immediately pay. I was confused because the rent is automatically deducted out of my checking account on the 1st of every month. Last month I received a letter from the management company saying I owed $395 due to rent increases and random sewer charges. I went to the management office with a check and told them that they were the ones deducting the money from my account. Apparently I was supposed to change the amount on my end but I didn't know. I told the women that I wasn't a degenerate and that I pay my bills and they were both like "you are so not on our radar". So today I get the letter and was surprised. I called the management office to speak to the woman who sent me the letter. She said that the rent hadn't been paid. I told her that I do the auto-pay. She looked at my account history and confirmed that my rent has always been paid on time. She said that her best guess was that when I paid some extra amount last month via the online system that the auto-pay thing setting was changed. She said that she would refund the $50 late fee if the payment went through by Monday. I told her that I had already paid it during our conversation and I would be expecting that refund. I'm just happy that I have the money to pay the rent and that this was all a strange mistake. I paid it immediately. I know with COVID many people weren't paying their rents but they couldn't be evicted. That protection is over. I can pay. I am signed up to pay. I hope things work on June 1!

Although I understand their problem, I think that the way of telling you about it was rude.

Automation sucks. My account says I don’t owe a car payment until November; however, it’s still automatically deducted every month. Oh, well, it’ll be paid off earlier.

That’s one reason I take a check for my rent to the office every month. I’m glad you got it straightened out.

I hope everything goes OK. You might want to follow up on that June 1 payment just to be sure.
