Jerry Lee Lewis is the newest member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
“The Killer,” age 86, was announced today (5/17) as one of the “class of 2022” members of inductees. The “modern era” inductee is the late Keith Whitley.
Now, if it sounds “weird” that one of the pioneers of rock and roll, and a member of the first induction class in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is going to be honored in Nashville….you may be right. It does sound weird. Superficially, that is. I mean, “Come along-a baby, we got chicken in the barn! Whose barn? What barn? My barn!” isn’t “Your Cheatin’ Heart.”
In reality, Lewis’ career was much more expansive and successful in country music than in rock and roll.
No kidding! Hits like “Would You Take Another Chance on Me,” “Once More With Feeling,” and “What’s Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made a Loser Out of Me)” were huge successes.
Lewis is 86 and had a serious stroke in 2019. It must be a bittersweet moment, however. Last week his country music cousin, Mickey Gilley, passed away.
There’ll be a “whole lotta shaking goin’ on” at his official induction!!
Here’s one of my favorite Jerry Lee country songs:

I hope you’re not devastated by the fact that one of the first Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees did country music.

I’m glad he’s alive to see this. It’s long overdue. As I said, his career was much longer and bigger in country music than in rock and roll.
