The bank screwed up

The first check we had mailed in April for the homeowner's association seemed to have vanished so my mom put a stop on it. From what I remember we didn't know the exact check number so she just told them the check amount and to whom it was made out to. Mom mailed them out a second check, which they received. And it turned out they had received the first check after all, just misplaced it. She told them to rip that one up and deposit the second one, which is what they did. The thing is that because of the stop my mom put on the previous check this second check was flagged for the stop as it's the same name and amount. And the check deposit was reversed with that money credited back to her. I am assuming that means that even though the check may have initially cleared the association doesn't have that money in their account. Her account is certainly not less by the amount of the check. She contacted the bank but nothing changed. I am surprised the association hasn't called her to inquire about this. Unless they have no idea this happened. My mom doesn't want to deal with this anymore. I wish I could do it but it's not my bank account so of course the bank won't talk to me.

I'm guessing they aren't aware of it, and hopefully the issue can be resolved. I'm glad we don't have fees like that.

We have monthly fees and a yearly fee. I doubt they are aware of what's going on.

@lovebuglena Probably. Might want to see if you can get the bank to release the money to them before they realize what's happened.

@kaylachan I would but not my account. My mom said she doesn't want to deal with it right now.

Unfortunately your mom will have to deal with it to get it straightened out. I'm sure that's the last thing on her mind right now. Sorry!

Yeah. Can't just let it go. I'd do it for her but the bank won't talk to me as it's not my account. The only thing I can do is maybe email them from her account and explain what happened. Or I can ask my mom to call me and then call them so we are three-way and I can explain everything myself while we are all on the line.

@LindaOHio Unfortunately, we are not in the same place. I don't think it's right to leave it like this, especially since we know what happened.

@lovebuglena If you are at her house, she can OK it to have them talk to you.

@RebeccasFarm If the association says we owe them nothing, let it be nothing. Better for us lol.

So the bank shows the check deposit and then the next transaction shows a reversal of that, with the money being credited back to my mom's account. The association says they didn't receive anything from their bank that the money didn't get deposited into their account, so we are all good. But based on my mom's bank transactions doesn't seem like we are lol if her bank put the money back into her account.

Sounds like what I had to deal with when my $4000 check was stolen. It makes me want to move to my "compound" in Montana.

Why Montana? Have you ever had a charge appear on your credit card (as pending) and then disappear altogether, as if you never bought anything from that merchant when in reality you have?

The bank should compensate your mom because they lost the first check.

The bank did not lose the first check. The check was misplaced by the people to whom we paid.

@nela13 That's okay. But the bank did screw up with the stop because the check that shouldn't have had a stop placed on it had the stop placed on it and that means the recipient doesn't have the funds.
