In my cruisin' through Netflix last night for something to watch I came upon a documentary called "Voyeur". Checked it out. A journalist/writer for The New Yorker magazine, Gay Talese had gotten a letter from a fan after writing "Thy Neighbor's Wife". (This was a book on American sexuality from World War II to the '70s) The letter writer, Gerald Foos wrote a long letter telling about his childhood and how he became a voyeur. He had bought a motel and renovated it to have vents in the ceiling of each of the rooms which he could reach by an overhead attack way by way of the utility room. For thirty years he watched people of all ages have sex through those vents and he kept a journal of each visitor and his thoughts. Foos marries twice and each wife knows what he is doing. There is a murder in one of the rooms. Gay Talese wanted to write a book about this guy. He waited for years to be sure that the statute of limitations has passed and because Foos had sold the motel to a Korean family and he didn't want them coming back on either of them because they had lost business due to any secrets the motel might or might not still hold. Finally, the book is written and entitled "The Voyeur's Motel". The New Yorker researches all aspects of the book and finds several discrepancies. They find the date of Foos's purchasing of the motel is 3 years off and, that he had sold the motel to a man named Ballard but had retained a key. They had both used the vents to watch people. Foos had never told Talese anything about this man or their voyeurism. What an amazing story on so many levels.
