Fitchburg Massachusetts Police Officer Steven Hachey was given a TEAM Award from the Worchester District Attorney's Office on Friday afternoon for his quick work on saving the life of an 11 year old girl whose name was not released to the public after she was choking on food during lunch at Longsjo Middle School in March . Officer Hachey who is a resource officer working at the middle school took action to use the Heimlich Maneuver on the young girl who had trouble breathing after a piece of food got inside of her throat which made it for her to catch her breath. After Officer Hachey was able to remove the food article from the girl's throat as she was able to breathe once again. As much as some of us do not like to see schools look like prison camps due to the fear of school shootings. resource officers are needed to save lives of teachers and students alike.

I have that same level of anxiety when I eat food by myself sometimes.

The girl was very lucky that Officer Hachey was nearby when she choked.

At my school all teachers are required to take a Red Cross course that covers things like this. Even in our high school health classes, students take the child and adult Red Cross course. So it should not be just police officers able to do this. Good for him, though.

That is a good idea for all school teachers to have a Red Cross first aid course.
